Which is the most value-for-money variant of the Toyota Hilux?
Among the wide variety of configurations, finding the right choice of Hilux can be a daunting task. If you are someone who is looking for a Fleet version of Hilux, you can go with either the base-spec Cab & Chassis 4x2 MT and configure it as per your choice, or go with the J 4x4 MT for the added benefit of rear seats, four-wheel drive configuration and a usable deck at the back.
If you wish to settle for a lifestyle pickup version of the Toyota Hilux, we believe that the Conquest 4x4 AT variant, which is the second-from-top variant of the lifestyle pickup lineup, makes the most sense. While it misses out on some of the goodies of the range-topping GR-S, it still gets several must-have features like a touchscreen infotainment system, automatic climate control, engine push start-stop button, LED lights, chunky tyres, and alloy wheels.
What features does the Toyota Hilux get?
The equipment list of the Toyota Hilux is at its best in the top-spec GR-S 4x4 AT variant, with it getting all the bells and whistles. How spacious is it?
The double cab variants in both Fleet and Lifestyle versions of the Toyota Hilux offer generous space, with this pickup having good legroom, knee room, headroom, and shoulder room for five passengers. The dimensions of all the variants of the Hilux differ from each other, though the cabin space of the double cab variants is the same in all. The cabin of the Hilux also scores high on practicality, with it having four cup holders, two bottle holders, seat back pockets, and a usable glove box.
What engine and transmission options are available?
Toyota offers the Hilux with two engine options. The Cab & Chassis 4x2 MT, Cargo 4x2 MT, FX 4x2 MT, J 4x2 MT, J 4x4 MT, E 4x2 MT, E 4x2 AT, G 4x2 MT, G 4x2 AT and Conquest 4x2 AT variants come with a 2.4-litre four-cylinder diesel engine. This engine produces a maximum power output of 150 PS and a maximum torque output of 343 Nm in 4x2 variants and 400 Nm in 4x4 variants. The Conquest 4x4 MT, Conquest 4x4 AT, and GR-S 4x4 AT get a larger 2.8-litre four-cylinder diesel engine, which claims 224 PS of maximum power and 550 Nm of maximum torque. This engine is being offered with a 6-speed manual in the Conquest 4x4 MT and a 6-speed automatic in the Conquest 4x4 AT and GR-S 4x4 AT variants.
What’s the mileage of the Toyota Hilux?
While Toyota hasn’t claimed the fuel efficiency figures of the Hilux, all the variants of the Hilux are believed to report varying efficiency figures due to their different powertrain combinations. The real-world fuel economy of the Toyota Hilux is believed to be 10-12 kmpl in city conditions and 14-15 kmpl in highway driving conditions.
How safe is the Toyota Hilux?
In its best form, the GR-S 4x4 AT, the Toyota Hilux is generously equipped with safety features for a pickup truck. The list includes seven airbags, ABS with EBD and brake assist, vehicle stability control, hill start assist, hill descent control, 360-degree parking camera, front, and rear parking sensors and a few ADAS features like pre-collision system, lane departure alert and dynamic radar cruise control.
How many colour options are there?
All the variants of the Toyota Hilux Fleet version come with a Super White II colour as standard. Meanwhile, coming to the lifestyle pickup version, the E and G variants are being offered with Super White II, Silver Metallic, Grey Metallic and Attitude Black Mica colours, with the G variants also coming with Dark Blue Mica. While the Conquest variants are available in Emotional Red, Super White II, Grey Metallic, Attitude Black Mica and Oxide Bronze Metallic, the GR-S variant can be had in Emotional Red, Attitude Black Mica and Super White II with Attitude Black Mica.
Should you buy the 2024 Toyota Hilux?
The expansive lineup of Toyota Hilux has something or the other for each type of buyer out there. While the Fleet variants are designed for commercial vehicle buyers, the Lifestyle pickup variants offer better comfort and convenience features and are easier to live with for family-oriented buyers. For the amazing durability, long-term reliability and go-anywhere ability, the Toyota Hilux ranks as one of the finest among pickup trucks.
What are my alternatives?
The Toyota Hilux range competes with other similarly-priced pickup trucks like Mitsubishi Triton, Nissan Navara, Isuzu D-Max, Ford Ranger, Mazda BT-50, JAC T8, Maxus T60, JMC Grand Avenue, GWM Cannon and KG Mobility Musso Grand.
Other things to consider
The pickups are bought for a particular purpose, with their buyers having a different perspective while buying a new vehicle. The buyers of pickups like the Toyota Hilux want the best of both the worlds of comfort and go-anywhere ability, with the fleet version buyers having a single-minded purpose of opting for load-haulers. However, if you want the ruggedness of a lifestyle pickup truck and the versatility of a family vehicle, you also have the options of three-row ladder-on-frame SUVs like Toyota Fortuner and Ford Everest.

The Toyota Hilux measures 5,200mm in length, 1,800mm in width, and 1,690mm in height. It has a rugged appearance that makes the vehicle immediately recognizable. It sports a bold front grille that lends an aggressive and commanding presence. The high-end variants come with a blacked-out grille with chrome or gloss-black accents. Toyota Hilux Mileage Running Cost
Pickup trucks are not exactly fuel efficient. They are more about performance and utility. The 2.4 Cab & Chassis 4x2 model returns a mileage of around 10kmpl in the city. The mileage increases to around 16kmpl on the highway. The midsized pickup is also available with a turbocharged 2.8-litre diesel powertrain that returns a mileage of around 8kmpl in urban conditions and 12kmpl on highways. The Toyota Hilux is a fairly fuel-efficient pickup, though it may not offer a best-in-class mileage.
Pros and cons:
Pro: Decent fuel economy
Con: Mileage lower in 2.8-litre powertrain
Hilux Ride & Handling
Similar to most midsized pickup trucks, the Toyota Hilux is more of a practical workhorse than a luxury cruiser. The suspension setup, featuring a double wishbone front and leaf spring rear, is built to withstand heavy loads and rough terrains, making it excellent for off-road driving and carrying cargo. The ride quality is a bit firm particularly when the cargo bed is empty, causing bumps on rough city roads.
On the highway, the Toyota Hilux’s ride quality is stable and planted, with good high-speed control. The steering feels a bit heavy and less responsive. Off-road, the Hilux truly shines, courtesy its high ground clearance of 279mm for the all-wheel-drive models. The two-wheel drive variants get 185mm of ground clearance. There’s a bit of body roll which is common among most pickup trucks.
Pros and Cons:
Pro: Stable highway ride
Con: Suspension is bit on the firmer side
Toyota Hilux Engine & Fuel Consumption
The entry-level 2.4 Cab & Chassis 4x2 model of the Toyota Hilux is equipped with a liquid cooled, four-cylinder, 2.4-litre diesel engine that produces 148PS/343Nm. The motor is mated to a six-speed manual transmission (MT). The powertrain provides a smooth low-end torque, allowing for easy acceleration in start-stop city traffic. It isn’t overtly quick, but manages to deliver steady power for urban conditions. The MT is smooth but requires a firm hand, particularly when shifting gears at a low speed. The clutch feels moderately heavy. The entry-level model handles inclines and light off-road trails well. But while carrying heavier loads, acceleration may feel sluggish compared to the higher 2.8-litre powertrain.
Pros and cons:
Pro: Capable pickup for city driving
Con: Heavy clutch
Hilux Braking & Safety
The Hilux is equipped with the Toyota Safety Sense (TSS) technology that comprises advanced driver-assist features. It includes a pre-collision warning system that automatically detects vehicles and pedestrians and applies emergency braking as and when required. There’s a lane-departure alert, and an adaptive cruise control system. The TSS, along with the reverse parking camera is available only in the higher models
The standard safety equipment of the Toyota Hilux includes seven airbags and parking sensors. The vehicle is mounted on a reinforced ladder-frame chassis that absorbs the impact in case of a collision and protects the occupants. The side-impact beams absorb and distribute crash forces. Other safety features include antilock braking, vehicle stability control, and hill-start assist.
Pros and cons:
Pro: Well-equipped in terms of safety
Con: Lack of 360-degree camera.
