Let’s check out the BYD Shark 6 DMO's 2 trims

BYD Cars Philippines has reinforced its position in the Philippine market with the introduction of the Shark 6 dual mode off-road (DMO). Specifically, it now has a contender in the very highly contested local pickup truck market segment. 

The BYD Shark 6 DMO, however, has two different trims for customers to choose from. The top-spec variant is the Shark 6 DMO Premium, priced at P 2.298 million. The entry-level version, on the other hand, is the Shark 6 DMO Advanced, which retails at P2.098 million. 

So, what are the differences between the two variants, and should buyers pick one over the other? Let’s find out here. 

BYD Shark 6 DMO Premium

Exterior

Style-wise, the BYD Shark 6 DMO Premium goes big in “tough truck” aesthetics. 

Up front, it sports a huge grille decorated by an equally sizable BYD logo. LED headlamps flank the said grille, and all are framed by eye-catching LED daytime running lamp strips. 

Positioned below the front fascia is a chunky bumper equipped with functional underbody protective bits. Up top, meanwhile, is a relatively flat hood that perfectly aligns with the vehicle’s window line and cargo tray. 

Similarly, the rear comes with square-shaped LED taillights linked together through the tailgate with an LED light strip. The said section also has a beefy bumper that also functions as a step ladder for easy access to the bed. 

Exterior features exclusive to the top-spec Shark 6 DMO Premium trim are a pair of aluminum roof rails and a sports bar. The two aforementioned pieces enhance the truck’s practicality and its outdoorsy feel. 

Other notable exterior equipment present on the top-spec BYD pickup truck include the following:

Interior

While the BYD Shark 6 DMO looks tough on the outside, it also has a very welcoming interior with ample space for up to five occupants. 

For starters, everyone inside is kept comfortable by a dual-zone automatic climate control system, leather upholstery, and soft-touch points. Additionally, the model’s air-conditioning system can ensure optimal air quality through its negative ion air purifier and particulate matter 2.5 air filter. 

Available for the top-spec model’s power-adjustable front seats is a heating and ventilation function. Plus, only the Premium trim has lumbar support for its driver. 

Standard on both variants are the following driving and comfort-related features:

• Eight-piece speaker system
• Heads-up display
• Wireless smartphone charging pad
• Rear cargo 12-volt sockets

For onboard entertainment and navigation, the BYD-made truck comes with a rotating 12.8-inch touchscreen display with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The said screen also features 4G connectivity, a voice assistant, and access to the BYD Cloud Service. The driver, meanwhile, can view pertinent vehicle information from a 10.25-inch digital gauge cluster. 

Safety

For safety, the top-spec BYD Shark 6 DMO’s basic kit consists of anti-lock braking, stability control, traction control, tire pressure monitoring, auto hold, hill-hold control, hill-descent control, anti-rollover system, ISOFIX, six airbags, a 360-degree view camera, and hydraulic brake assist - among others. 

The aforementioned are reinforced by a suite of advanced driver-assist systems such as the following: 

• Adaptive cruise control
• Predictive collision warning
• Automatic emergency braking
• Lane departure warning
• Emergency lane keep assist 
• Rear cross-traffic alert
• Rear cross-traffic braking
• Blind spot detection
• High beam assist
• Trailer power inteface

Powertrain

Propelling the top-spec BYD Shark 6 DMO Premium is a 1.5-liter turbocharged inline-4 gasoline mill connected to a dual motor setup and a 29.6 kilowatt-hour Blade battery. 

Altogether, the said system can generate up to 429 horsepower and 650 Newton-meters of torque. Plus, it also boasts an electric-only range of 100 kilometers, a 30-80 percent fast charging rate of 25 minutes, regenerative braking, and a vehicle-to-load capability. 

For optimal traction on rough terrain, the model also has specific 4x4 drive modes for mud, sand, and gravel. 

Ensuring ride quality and handling for the BYD Shark 6 DMO Premium are double wishbone suspension systems for the front and rear. The top-spec model also uses front and rear disc brakes. 

Additionally, the BYD-produced nameplate has a payload capacity of 835 kilograms (kg), a maximum wade depth of 700 mm, and a towing capacity of 2,500 kg. 

BYD Shark 6 DMO Advanced

Positioned as the entry-level trim of the BYD Shark 6 DMO is the Advanced. 

Generally speaking, the said variant of the BYD pickup truck carries over most of the top-spec Premium’s exterior and interior features, as well as its powertrain. However, it does lack some select bits that are exclusive to the higher-end version. 

Specifically, its driver’s seat does not come with lumbar support. Also absent on the entry-level ride is a heating/ventilation feature for the front seats, a negative ion air purifier, and a particulate matter 2.5 filter. 

Also unavailable for the Advanced exterior are the high beam assist, side steps, trailer power interface, and sports bar, which all come standard on the Premium trim. 

The biggest difference between the two variants, however, has to do with safety gear. To note, the Advanced comes with the same basic safety kit as the Premium, but it lacks an ADAS suite altogether. On the flip side, the more basic version still has a standard cruise control system. 

Final thoughts

In summary, the huge disparity between the entry-level Advanced and the top-spec Premium is the presence of an ADAS suite. So, buyers wanting more safety out of a possible daily ride should be able to turn towards the more expensive variant, while folks who are more confident behind the wheel will do well with the more affordable trim. 

Regardless of the price difference of P200,000 between the two, both are still quite accessible rides, considering the vast number of features they offer. Plus, the BYD Shark 6 DMO also counts as one of the most peppiest in the midsize pickup truck segment at the moment, and that’s always a win for its would-be buyers. 

Folks who are serious about getting the BYD pickup truck, however, should give it a test drive first. Doing so, after all, will result in a more informed purchase in the end.
