Suzuki Jimny 5-Door: strengths and weaknesses

While the Jimny 3-Door version has made a strong impression on Philippine-based car buyers, Suzuki Philippines Incorporated further enhanced its lineup with the introduction of the 5-Door version back in 2024. 

With the addition of two more doors to the said model, it can now provide better ingress and egress for its second-row seats. So, while it carries over plenty of features and mechanical details from the older version, it has become more attractive to those who want a more usable mini sports utility vehicle (SUV). 

But does the Jimny 5-Door have any weaknesses car buyers should be aware of? Let’s find out here. 

Pros

Strong off-road performance

As expected, the Suzuki Jimny 5-Door boasts similar capabilities as the older 3-Door version. It is particularly strong as an off-road vehicle due to its high ground clearance and its relatively grunty engine. 

For reference, the Suzuki-made SUV utilizes a 1.5-liter inline-4 gasoline engine paired with a five-speed manual or a four-speed automatic transmission. At maximum, the four-banger can produce up to 100 horsepower and 130 Newton-meters of torque. It also has a ground clearance of 210 millimeters and a four-wheel-drive system equipped with a low-range transfer gear. 

The aforementioned output figures aren’t impressively large, but take note that the Jimny 5-Door tips the scales at just 1,205 kilograms (automatic variant). 

Additionally, the model rides on a very robust 3-link rigid axle suspension system with coil springs. The aforementioned assures a relatively stable ride on pavement and plenty of flexibility when taking on extremely challenging terrain. 

The Jimny 5-Door also rides on a ladder frame chassis, which Suzuki designed to be highly rigid. The aforementioned ensures durability, which is ideal for any off-road-spec nameplate. 

As a side note, a good number of after-market manufacturers have already introduced their respective lineups of accessories for the Jimny 5-Door. So, despite its newness to the market, folks who want to modify the model already have tons of options to choose from when it comes to roof racks, protective parts, and cargo-related aftermarket bits. 

Even Suzuki itself has released a collection of off-road-related genuine accessories for the Jimny 5-Door. Available in the local market are parts such as mud flaps, a multi-roof rack, a roof basket, an attachable tent system, and differential guards - among others. 

Decent amount of creature comforts

While the Jimny 5-Door is known to be a rugged rig, it does offer an ample amount of creature comforts. 

For starters, the Jimny 5-Door GLX AT trim is equipped with a nine-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The screen is linked to a four-piece speaker system, and the model also comes with a central console USB port and two 12-volt accessory outlets. 

Most of its dash is made out of sturdy plastic, but the Suzuki-made off-roader has fabric-clad seats, a 50:50 split-folding rear seat, and separate head restraints. Depending on the trim, it also has an automatic air-conditioning system, which comes with a pollen filter. 

With regard to driving-related features, the Jimny 5-Door comes with the following:

Available for the model are dual front airbags, front side airbags, curtain airbags, as well as a front passenger airbag deactivation system. It also has anti-lock braking, ISOFIX child seat anchors, hill-hold control, hill-descent control, electronic stability control, a reverse camera, and rear parking sensors. 

Cons

Still a four-seater

Having two extra doors ensures easier accessibility to its rear seats, but it doesn’t really translate to additional room for elbows.

Granted, the vehicle does have a decent amount of legroom, but the rear row of the Jimny 5-Door, similar to the 3-Door, is stuffy when it comes to side-by-side rear seat space. As such, the model remains to be a four-seater. 

The 5-Door version’s trunk, however, can fit up to 211 liters (rear seats up), which is notably larger compared to the 3-Door model. However, its rear seats don’t fold flat, and that may present some issues when packing the ride up to capacity.

Final thoughts

Overall, the Suzuki Jimny 5-Door is a well-equipped SUV with an ample amount of safety gear and creature comforts. It also boasts more usability and practicality and is friendly towards its rear cabin occupants, at least when compared to the 3-Door version. 

Due to its diminutive size, however, buyers should understand that it is by no means the most practical SUV in the market right now. Sure, its key strength is its compact and lightweight body, but there are many rides within the same price range that will be more usable if you want to sufficiently accommodate five passengers. 

Regardless, the Jimny 5-Door can make for a potent off-road rig. So, if you’re in the market for something less complicated and less burly than your run-of-the-mill pickup truck or three-row SUV, then you better take the time to give this nameplate a good ol’ test drive.
