The lion's pride: The new Peugeot 5008 and its specs

Like the lion drawn on its badge, Peugeot, well, wants to roar — specifically back into the local market with a new distributor, and its updated 5008 leading the pack of Peugeot automobiles. 

The updates recently given to the 5008 include the French carmaker's signature fascia, new interior tech, and a raft of safety features. 

It's also possible that all of these will come at a lower price, considering that the new 5008 is manufactured in Malaysia, where Peugeot's parent company Stellantis operates a factory. 

Malaysia's proximity from the Philippines could mean that Peugeot Philippines would pay lower taxes to bring the new 5008 here, instead of importing it from across the globe. 

Not only does being made in Southeast Asia benefit the new 5008's asking price, but also the SUV's quality, as well. The new 5008 — and the future products from Peugeot Philippines, for that matter — are undergoing "specific endurance and quality testing to meet the needs of customers in Southeast Asia."

This "quality testing" involves a "combined 300,000 kilometers of testing in the diverse local climate and environmental landscape," the local distributor added. 

Perhaps, these quality evaluations are being done to dissuade consumers' misconception about the reliability of European cars. 

So, the new 5008 holds the promise of value and durability. What else does it offer? 

As mentioned, the new 5008 is immediately recognizable with its facelift, which now consist of a frameless radiator grille, and full LED headlights with "illuminated fangs” daytime running lights. Those fangs lend aggression to the looks of many new Peugeot cars. 

Elsewhere on its exterior, the new 5008 continues to wear très chic details such as the expansive greenhouse, minimalist flanks with chrome and silver details, and a pair of three-lined LED rear lights with a transparent smoke lens and scrolling indicators.

Inside the leather-lined cabin are three rows of seats, which are ready to accommodate seven. Up front, Peugeot's i-Cockpit design carries a digital driver display and smartphone-mirroring-enabled infotainment that both serve, well, entertainment and information.  

The second- and third-row passengers will get to enjoy the panoramic sunroof and six speakers throughout the cabin. 

The interior is as practical as it is pretty, as when the rear passengers are expelled, their seats can be folded to create more than 2,000 liters worth of cargo room. 

Now moving to the said safety tech, a majority of these features are included in the new 5008's Advanced Driver Assistance Systems. ADAS keeps on the lookout for vehicles that become hidden in the car's blind spots, steers to keep the car centered in its lane, and reminds the driver if he or she is inattentive.
