The MPV MVP: 4 standout areas of the Suzuki Ertiga

Filipinos have long been sticklers for both value and quality — a virtue that extends even to car buying. Throughout the decades, we have matured as a market into very discriminating consumers who rightfully expect the biggest bang for our buck when shopping for mobility solutions.

That finds expression in several ways: One is our predilection for multi-purpose vehicles (MPVs) which promise to move more people (and cargo) for comparatively less. But the caveat here is that because MPVs tend to be priced right at or below P1 million, some brands scrimp on the quality and features.

The Suzuki Ertiga, on the other hand, has acknowledged a best-in-class performer in this category because it ticks the right boxes even as its pricing across variants stays below the aforementioned P1 million mark.

Predicated on a more powerful and efficient 1.5-liter engine delivering 103hp and 138Nm, the Ertiga’s performance can be accessed through either a four-speed automatic transmission (on the GLX and GL) or a five-speed manual (GA and GL).

The seven-seater has been proven to be an ideal match for modern Filipino families and the demands of their lifestyle. We take a closer look at what makes this MPV an MVP (most valuable people mover).

Attractive exterior

The current-generation Ertiga boasts an all-new exterior design that starts with a distinctive, taller, and wider front fascia conveying a stronger presence. Its chrome grille with the Suzuki logo at the center is flanked by stylish and bright headlamps. The MPV has an elegant shoulder line which complements its deeper curves. The vehicle also gets a more aerodynamic profile and is given classy chrome touches. At the rear are large combination lamps for better visibility.

Suzuki employed computer-aided engineering and wind-tunnel testing to achieve improved aerodynamics, redounding in enhanced performance and fuel economy.

Modern, comfortable interior

The Ertiga flaunts a classy, elegant black-hued cabin — further distinguishing it in the highly competitive segment. Legible instrumentation, a D-shaped steering wheel, 10-inch touchscreen, and keyless push-to-start system headline a muted, contemporary look accented by woodgrain panels (on the GLX). It’s not all looks either as space has been optimized as a comfortable haven for all occupants – helped along by flexible seating to configure the space as needed by cargo and passengers. Front-seat height can be adjusted, while the second row can slide by up to 240 millimeters.

Conveniences

It’s the little touches that matter — all adding up to a user-friendly, thoughtful package that is the Ertiga. For starters, the MPV has a dedicated driver-side holder perfect for bills and coins. It gets a spacious glove box as well. Meanwhile, seatback pockets offer a quick way to store reading materials and such for long trips. A USB port and accessories socket makes for easy charging and powering of accessories, and connection of devices to the infotainment system.

Even second-row passengers get their own power socket for easy charging of mobile devices. There’s also a drink holder capable of accommodating a 1,000-ml. bottle. First- and second-row doors get generous pockets for stowing stuff and even drink bottles as well. Ventilated cupholders for the front occupants will keep their drinks cool.

Speaking of cool, second- and third-row passengers are provided dedicated overhead air-conditioning vents with fan-speed control.

Safety suite

Most important of all, Suzuki assures the safety of all Ertiga occupants with a slew of active and passive measures designed to give passengers a shell of protection.

When reversing, the Suzuki Ertiga driver receives assistance through ultrasonic sensors in the rear bumper which detects obstacles while the vehicle is backing up. Warning sounds advise the driver when an obstacle draws closer.

Suzuki’s advanced proprietary TECT (Total Effective Control Technology) body uses ultra-high-tensile steel for greater rigidity while simultaneously lowering weight despite its larger overall dimensions compared to the previous model. TECT also “more efficiently absorb and disperse impact energy in the event of a collision.” The Japanese carmaker also reports that “new load paths beneath the engine compartment further mitigate damage in the event of a frontal collision at high speed.”

And in case of that frontal collision, SRS airbags deploy for the driver and front passenger.

Even pedestrians were kept in mind during the development of the Ertiga. Its body has been engineered and constructed to mitigate pedestrian injury — with the bonnet, windscreen wiper area, front bumper, and other parts able to absorb impact to mitigate head and leg injuries to the pedestrian.

Additionally, Suzuki’s trademark HEARTECT platform heightens occupant safety by employing a smoothly curving frame promising rigidity and enhanced driving performance. In the event of a collision, it disperses energy more efficiently for greater passenger protection. HEARTECT also has an additional benefit of cutting down the Ertiga’s NVH (noise, vibration, and harshness) levels while raising fuel efficiency by shaving off weight.

The vehicle also boasts anti-lock brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution, and Isofix-compatible lower anchorages along with top-tether anchorages to secure child seats.

All told, the Suzuki Ertiga is chockful of features that indeed contribute to a complete package that makes it a true MVP among MPV.
