2020 Mercedes-Benz EQV is here, boasts a 400-km range

MANILA: The trend is of SUVs, crossovers, and EVs. Yeah, electric vehicles are finally getting the attention that they have always deserved. Also, thanks to the evolving battery and other EV technologies, more and more automakers are now not only introducing new EVs but also upgrading their existing models with hybrid and EV tech.

With pretty much every form factor from hatchback to sedan and SUV, we can now find an EV that matches our requirements. However, the minivan segment has been a category that was left out by the manufacturers and did not feature an EV in the portfolio.

Earlier this year, Mercedes-Benz previewed an EV minivan concept at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show. Today, the concept is a reality and has filled the void of an EV in the minivan segment. It interestingly took the German auto-giant just five months to roll out a production model of the all-electric minivan, which is commendable. Especially when we take into account the time that other carmakers spend in converting their concept to a production model.

Coming back to the 2020 Mercedes-Benz EQV, the EV minivan seems to be inspired by the V-Class. The front fascia of the minivan incorporates a large grille with chrome surrounds, a pair of upswept headlamps, and a large Mercedes-Benz logo in the heart of the grille.

Moving on to the side profile, we find roof-rails and a set of 18-inch alloys which are exclusive to the EQV. A significant part of the rear end is covered with glass and stars vertically stacked taillights. On the inside, the 2020 Mercedes-Benz EQV features leather upholstery, 6 to 8 seats, and the MBUX infotainment system, which gets all the necessary connectivity and convenience features like Bluetooth, AUX, USB, Apple CarPlay, and even voice control.

Because the 2020 Mercedes-Benz is an EV, there is an electric motor that sends the power to the front wheels. The motor on the minivan produces 204 PS of maximum power and a peak torque of 362 Nm, while the top speed of the EQV is 160 kmph. Courtesy of a 90 kWh lithium-ion battery pack, a single full charge enables the first-ever EV EQV to travel for around 400 kilometres. A 110 kW DC fast charger can charge the battery pack up to 80% in a matter of 45 minutes. As they say, electric is the future, and the future is here. Well, almost.
