Step into the cabin of the Mercedes Benz G-Class, and one can’t stop praising about how the designers have effortlessly maintained the balance of traditional design elements and modern-day technologies and features onboard.

The Mercedes Benz G-Class has a three-spoke multi-functional steering wheel with broad silver spokes and a large twin-panel behind it, which has rounded edges and includes the twin 10.25-inch high definition screens for instrument console as well as an infotainment system.

While the upper layer of the dashboard is finished in soft-touch leather, the lower one gets thick silver garnish, which extends over the center console and around the propeller-like round AC vents. The lower portion of the center console gets piano black finish, with two sleek looking control panels for the infotainment system and climate controls stacked one over the other.

Over all these years, Mercedes Benz has successfully managed to retain the original flavor of the G-Class – a squared looking SUV with an old-school design. And in this latest iteration of the SUV, the inclusion of many modern design elements and features do effortlessly blend with the iconic silhouette as well as the boxy design of the Mercedes Benz G-Class.

The front profile of the Mercedes Benz G-Class looks quite in-your-face, with the heightened front bonnet ending up in a vertically laid front fascia. The front fascia comprises of a rectangular grille, which compared to that of the previous generations, now has slightly rounded edges and broad horizontal chrome lines running within it.

The round headlamps, which are high performance LED units and include daytime running LEDs as well, are enclosed in rectangular panels adjacent to the front grille. Like before, the turn indicators are mounted on the corners of the bonnet with their protruding out design. 

The boxy silhouette of the Mercedes Benz G-Class is the most evident when you view it from the sides. The squared windows, angular pillars which are almost vertical, sharp contrasting black colored character line flowing sideways and including door handles and trapezoidal off wheel arches are all the elements, which have been there on the G-Class from day one, and are retained in this latest iteration as well.

At the back, the Mercedes Benz G-Class remains one of the very few luxury SUVs out there to have its spare wheel mounted on the tailgate, within a classy looking cover. The rectangular layouts for the rear windscreen as well as tail lamps mounted on the rear bumper corners look old school yet cool on the Mercedes Benz G-Class.

The Mercedes-Benz G-Class is hailed as an iconic SUV for a reason, and that boils down to the fantastic mechanicals it is bestowed with under the skin. The suspension of the Mercedes Benz G-Class is armed with adaptive damping adjustment, while it also gets permanent all-wheel drive differential and differential locks for the transfer case as well as front and rear axles. 

The Mercedes-Benz G-Class is available in the Philippines in a single G 350D variant, which houses a powerful and torquey 3.0-litre inline-six diesel engine paired to a 9-speed automatic transmission as standard. The engine breathes out a maximum power output of 288 PS, while the peak torque output tops out at a staggering 600 Nm.

Being a top-range luxury SUV, the Mercedes-Benz G-Class is blessed with a host of safety features such as front, side, curtain and knee airbags, ABS with EBD and brake assist, electronic stability program, traction control, hill start assist, hill descent control, lane keep assist, blind-spot monitoring system, front and rear parking sensors, 360-degree parking camera and PRE-SAFE system.

With minute revisions to the exterior design, massively spruced up interiors and strong mechanicals, the Mercedes-Benz G-Class still is one highly relevant luxury SUV, which is at home on both smoother tarmacs as well as off the roads.
