2020 Mercedes-Benz GLB is here with a seven-seat arrangement

MANILA: SUVs and crossovers are gaining popularity at a rapid pace. Moreover, the demand for spacious SUVs with more seating capacity is on the rise as well. In order to cater to the increasing demand and cut the sales of other manufacturers, Mercedes-Benz has done something unusual. Unveiled by the German automobile manufacturer is the all-new 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLB. Why we call this move unusual is because GLB is the first ever seven-seater crossover by Mercedes-Benz.

While the third row of seats has certainly hit the boot space, however, a long trip with much more friends than ever before is also a treat we can’t say no to. However, Mercedes-Benz says that only people up to 1.68 m tall will be comfortable in the third row. With that said, it will be true to say that the third row is indeed meant for kids and people with short height.

Speaking of the design language of the Mercedes-Benz GLB, the crossover takes inspiration from the Concept GLB that the automaker previewed not so long ago. The GLB features a sort of boxy design philosophy and boasts a flat nose, something we haven’t seen much by Mercedes-Benz.

At the front is a trademark Mercedes-Benz grille with diamond pins flanked by a pair of upswept LED headlamps. Move to the rear and you will find slim & modern Mercedes-Benz wraparound taillights. Underneath the all-new GLB is a very familiar chassis of the A-Class. On the inside, the all-new GLB has its own flair. There is a modern-looking dashboard with a flat-top and the MBUX infotainment system. Customers also get to avail an optional all-digital instrument cluster.

Moving to the mechanical aspects of the crossover, the 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLB gets four engine options - two gasoline fed and the same number of diesel guzzlers. The two gasoline-fed motors are - a 1.3-litre unit with 163 PS/250 Nm and a turbocharged 2.0-litre mill that makes 224 PS/350 Nm. Then are the two diesel-powered engines with a displacement of 2000cc and different tuning, making 150 PS/320 Nm and 190 PS/400 Nm, respectively.

In different markets across the globe, the 2020 Mercedes-Benz will be locking horns with the likes of Audi Q3 and BMW X1. The interesting thing here is that the Audi and BMW crossovers do come with a third row, not even as an option. So, the newest crossover by Mercedes-Benz might just be the knockout punch by the German automaker. What do you think?
