BAIC BJ20: Features explained
BAIC is a Chinese brand that is trying to establish itself in other growing countries like ours. It has got a number of products to offer in the local market like M60, M20, etc. In Sept 2018, BAIC launched two more vehicles to further expand its portfolio. These vehicles were the BAIC M50S and the BAIC BJ20. We have covered the features of the M50S in one of our earlier stories. Today, we are going to put our focus on the BAIC BJ20 and its various features.
Exterior features
LED daytime running lights
The BAIC BJ20 features an unconventional style at the front. It isn’t the first time that we’ve seen such a design but still, it is a bit hard to digest. The LED daytime running lights have been placed above the entire headlight assembly. If you want a reference, check out the styling of the Hyundai Kona.
Perhaps, this is BAIC’s strategy to woo in more customers. But it is a 50-50 situation as not everyone would like to look at it every morning. The shape of the LED daytime running lights is decent and it appears that BAIC tried to make them the eyebrows of the BJ20.
Xenon headlamps
Below the LED DRLs are the xenon headlamps. It is expected that they would perform quite well in the dark. The shape and design of the assembly is nothing extraordinary and work just fine.
Front grille
BAIC tried to give a unique shape to the front grille of the BJ20. The front grille has got five U-shaped chrome shapes that look like teeth of a creature, perhaps. We’re not so sure as to how well these teeth would grip the customers. The grille also tries to give the car a strong stance.
Bumper, body cladding, and roof rails
BAIC BJ20 might not look very attractive but one thing is for sure, it definitely looks rugged thanks to the strong front bumper and body cladding. The roof rails also help to enhance its ruggedness. Also, the wheel arches are quite big giving the impression that this thing can be abused in off-road conditions.
Ground clearance
You’d be surprised to know that the BJ20 has got a ground clearance of 215 mm. This is quite a lot and it means that you really don’t need to worry about hitting the underneath probably ever. And, of course, it would allow you to enjoy some off-road flavour as well.
LED tail lamps
The BAIC BJ20 gets LED tail lamps, which is a good thing, but they do remind us of a specific and very popular SUV. We are not complaining but yes, things could have been different and thus better.
Interior features
10.1-inch infotainment system
This is quite a large screen size and the quality looks pretty great too. The infotainment system supports Bluetooth, USB, and HDMI connections and also gets a radio and smartphone connection capability.
Piano-black dashboard finish
BAIC has used a lot of piano-black finish on the dashboard of the BJ20. While on one hand, it enhances the premium-ness of the car, on the other it attracts dust and fingerprints very easily. So you’d need to be extra cautious if you want to have a cleaner cabin.
Red highlights in the cabin
The BJ20 cabin features red highlights at some places which is a nice touch. The AC vents get red surrounds and the stitches on the seats and on the steering wheel are also red. It adds a sporty feel to the car.
Panoramic sunroof
The panoramic sunroof, when fully opened, makes the cabin appear spacious. This is a great feature that BAIC has incorporated in the BJ20.
Safety features
BAIC BJ20 comes with a decent number of safety features like ABS with EBD and BA, electronic stability, traction control, hill hold control, front and rear parking sensor, tyre pressure monitoring system, reverse camera, dual front airbags with front side airbags, etc. Overall, the BJ20 is quite a safe vehicle.
Engine
The BAIC BJ20 specs have got a 1.5-litre engine which has been tuned to produce 147 hp at 6000 rpm and churn out a peak torque of 210 Nm at 2000 to 4500 rpm. For the transmission, you get a CVT unit. The top speed of the BJ20 is over 170 kmph but we would advise to not try to set a record in this thing.
So, there you go, guys. These were some of the features of the BAIC BJ20. It is available in two variants - Standard and Luxury - and both of them are available in 4 different colors - Black, Red, White, and Green. The BAIC BJ20 price for the Standard variant is Php 1.15 million whereas if you want the Luxury variant then you’d need to spend a bit more, Php 1.29 million.
