KEY TAKEAWAYS
What kind of progress has Bentley made since being certified carbon neutral in 2019?
Since first being certified as carbon neutral in 2019, Bentley has continued to invest in further emissions reduction. As a result, the carmaker's CO2 emissions decreased by 81%.What measures does Bentley implement to lower CO2 emissions?
Bentley uses solar energy in its factory and carport, and renewable gas. The carmaker's employees also use Bentley hybrid vehicles.Bentley said the PAS 2060 Carbon Neutral certification "reflects the measures taken by Bentley to reduce carbon emitted through its operations." The British auto marque also claimed that it was the first luxury automotive brand aim for carbon neutrality by 2030.
Since first being certified as carbon neutral in 2019, Bentley has continued to invest in further emissions reduction. As a result, the carmaker's CO2 emissions decreased by 81%.
The "UK's largest solar car port" in Bentley's factory in Crewe is said to contribute to the lower CO2. Covering 1,378 car parking spaces, the solar array comprises 10,000 solar panels.
Combined with the 20,815 rooftop panels fitted to the factory roofs, the total on-site solar panel energy capacity is "enough to power over 1,750 homes."
"Thanks to focused actions by colleagues and the effects of the pandemic on reducing business travel, Bentley’s carbon footprint for operations has dropped," Bentley said in a release.
Bentley Member of the Board for Manufacturing Peter Bosch shed more light into the brand's CO2 reduction: "Long-term investment and forward planning have ensured that 100% of the electricity and gas used by Bentley is now renewable."
Bosch said that the brand's Crewe site used solar arrays, or bought in as 100% Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin (ReGo) certified electricity, and 100% Renewable Gas Guarantees of Origin (RGGO) certified gas.
He also added that the use of three new energy-efficient boilers has also reduced power consumption.
Meanwhile, 130 charging points dotted around the Bentley site charge the brand's current hybrid and future BEV models. The carmaker's employees then use the hybrid vehicles as company cars, further dropping the CO2 levels.
"We are committed to reducing off-setting and our team is continually implementing great solutions to reduce our impact year-on-year. Our ultimate aim is to create a net climate positive manufacturing footprint by 2030," Bosch concluded.
