The announcement gives the Crewe team and the region a big boost as a high-value sustainable manufacturing hub. The investment will also enable the Crewe manufacturing infrastructure to be fundamentally reformed, and ensure Bentley’s future at Crewe for the next generation of products and employees. Crewe will become a “Dream Factory,” a high-tech, eco-friendly, and versatile manufacturing facility.
“Simultaneously accelerating our Beyond100 strategy and securing BEV production at Crewe, alongside a £2.5-billion investment, makes this a major landmark in Bentley’s 102-year history. It is a shining light for the Bentley family, our suppliers and partners, as well as the automotive industry and UK manufacturing as a whole,” Bentley Motors Chairman and CEO Adrian Hallmark stated. “This latest announcement regarding Bentley’s Beyond100 plan confirms the initiation of a major transformative phase in the company’s long and illustrious history. The world is changing and we need to play our part in neutralizing our environmental impact. That means delivering on our aim to be end-to-end carbon neutral by 2030, and reaffirming our role as the leader in sustainable luxury mobility.”
With the new investment, Bentley will now be able to reduce its carbon footprint across all products and non-factory operations. The company has already made significant advances in revamping the historic Crewe facility, establishing an industry-leading certified carbon-neutral site.
With the goal of increasing the number of solar panels in Crewe from 30,000 to 40,000 in the next two years, an expansion of on-site energy production will be one of the latest initiatives. Bentley is also looking at using biofuel in its vehicle fleet, including the legendary Heritage Collection. Bentley’s partners are also encouraged to support its objective of being carbon neutral by 2030, and suppliers are encouraged to meet basic sustainability standards. Bentley’s global retailer network will follow suit, with each striving to achieve carbon neutrality by 2025.
The Dream Factory takes a go-to-zero approach to environmental impacts of production. Bentley targets to minimize water usage and other environmental impacts for every vehicle made in Crewe until 2030.
The upcoming Flying Spur PHEV, as well as five additional derivatives, will further strengthen Bentley’s position in the luxury hybrid car segment. Bentley’s hybrid vehicles are expected to account for more than 20% of total sales this year.
