KEY TAKEAWAYS
When will Bentley stop producing W12 engines?
The iconic engine will be replaced by the V8 hybrid engine by summertime 2024 in the United Kingdom. How much power can the new V8 hybrid engine produce?
The new powertrain can dish out up to 779 horsepower — 90 hp higher than the W12 engine.Named the Ultra Performance Hybrid, the Crewe-headquartered marque shared in a statement that the new mill — to provide the highest power output in a Bentley — will be the “most dynamic, most responsive and most efficient system in Bentley’s history.”
The aforementioned engine, which will be out by summertime of 2024 in the United Kingdom (around June to September), will be the brand’s next leading powertrain as the 6.0-litre twin turbo W12 engine heads towards retirement.
The V8 hybrid powertrain builds on the company’s existing hybrid powertrains, but can deliver more churn with its 779 horsepower (hp) output — reflecting a 90 hp difference than the W12 engine derivatives fitted in the Flying Spur and GT.
The hybrid system gives an 80-kilometer electric-only range.
The new Ultra Performance Hybrid is said to deliver carbon emissions of under 50 grams per kilometer (based on Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicle Test Procedure standards).
To note, Bentley built 105,000 W12 engines over the last two decades.
