Euro NCAP Name Eight Safest Car One in Each Segment
MANILA: Euro NCAP has named eight cars, each from a different segment that according to its test stand on the epitome of safety for 2015. Called the Best in Class Cars of 2015, Euro NCAP each year gives out a list wherein it specifies the 'best in class' cars that have surpassed their respective competitors. The safety rating is based on four assessment areas including, Adult Occupant, Child Occupant, Pedestrian and Safety Assist. The weighted sum of their scores (don't use your imagination, it's a statistical term) gives the final result that forms the base of vehicles comparison.
Coming to the important part, the eight-car segments mentioned by Euro NCAP are – Large Off-Road (SUV), Small Off-Road (Crossover), Large Family Car, Small Family Car, Supermini, Large MPV, Small MPV, and Roadster Sport.
Now in the Large Off-Road Class, it was the recently launched Volvo XC90 that was named as the safest SUV of 2015. Under Adult Occupant category it scored 97%, while in child occupant and pedestrian category it got 87% and 72% respectively. Volvo XC90 got a perfect 100% in safety assist. It competed against the likes of Lexus RX and Audi Q7.
Safest Crossover of 2015 was Mercedes- Benz GLC that scored highest in Adult Occupant and lowest in Safety Assist. The car also received advanced rewards for Mercedes-Benz Attention Assist and Mercedes-Benz Pre-Safe system.
Safest Large and Small Family Car of 2015 were Jaguar XE and Infinite Q30, as both acquired a 5-star rating from Euro NCAP. Jaguar XE fought with Kia Optima, Audi A4, Skoda Superb and Toyota Avensis. Infinite on the other hand had Opel Astra, Honda HR-V and Renault Megane as competitors.
Honda new kid Jazz got a 5-star rating under the supermini category and it scored 93% in adult occupant, 85% in child occupant, 73% in pedestrian and 71% in Safety Assist.
Ford with its Galaxy and VW with Touran became the 2015 safest Large MPV and Small MPV. And lastly, under the Roadster Sport listing, Mazda MX-5 surpassed BMW Z4 and Audi TT. As an interesting fact, none in the Roadster category scored a perfect five. Taking about Mazda MX-5, the safest roadster of 2015 gained 85% in adult occupant, 80% in child occupant, 93% in pedestrian, and 64% in safety assist.
A Little about Euro NCAP
Euro NCAP stands for The European New Car Assessment Programme, it is an automobile safety measuring organization that was established in 1997. Seven European Governments, various monitoring and consumer organization form its part and are dedicated to providing authentic safety levels of cars sold in Europe. With an aim to help you choose the safest car and also to encourage safety improvements among manufacturers. Each year the scoring gets tougher, with new criteria being added to the list. Like in 2016 Autonomous Emergency Braking will become an important part of the overall scoring process.
