Ford EcoSport - Maintenance guide
When Ford EcoSport launched in 2014, it was the only subcompact crossover you could buy for under Php 1 million. The five-seat SUV had exceptional ground clearance, which was one of its strong points. Unfortunately, you could feel a major budget cut on its sluggish performance and lackluster design.
The new EcoSport may have hits and misses but it makes up for the shortcomings of its predecessor while retaining some of its best features. Among the key highlights of Ford Ecosport include its updated styling, flexible cargo space, intuitive audio system, impressive ride height, and a more powerful engine.
Ford EcoSport runs on either 5-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmission. It is currently available in five variants, here is a look at Ford EcoSport price list:
Ford EcoSport Ambiente MT | Php 920,000 |
Ford EcoSport Trend MT | Php 970,000 |
Ford EcoSport Trend AT | Php 1,030,000 |
Ford EcoSport Titanium AT | Php 1,100,000 |
Ford EcoSport EcoBoost Titanium AT | Php 1,190,000 |
All variants get an upgraded engine, which means that Ford EcoSport is worth its price. Ambiente, Trend, and Titanium are mated to a 1.5-liter Ti-VCT engine that delivers 123 hp and 150 Nm. The range-topping EcoBoost Titanium gets a 1.0-liter GTDi engine with 125 hp and 170 Nm.
Given these specs, there is no doubt that the latest EcoSport offers better performance than the older model. But if you want to keep it in top shape, you will need to place it on regular car maintenance.
How often should I service my Ford?
Ford recommends taking your car for scheduled service visits every six (6) months or every 10,000 kilometers – whichever comes first. This applies to all Ford vehicles including the EcoSport.
Routine car maintenance is a must. It allows you to check your Ford EcoSport for underlying issues before they get worse. It also ensures that your vehicle is in good working condition so it will continue to perform at an optimum level.
Ultimately, these check-ups are designed to make your vehicle last longer. However, you don’t always need professional help. While waiting for your next trip to the service center, here are some tips for maintaining your Ford EcoSport.
Tip #1 – Change and refill the engine oil
The oil absorbs heat and keeps the parts of your engine lubricated. This enables it to work efficiently with minimal risks for overheating. Engine oil does collect dirt over time. Replacing it with a fresh batch every six (6) months or every 10,000 kilometers as per Ford’s guidelines should keep the engine running smoothly.
Do note that according to the Ford EcoSport specs sheet, EcoBoost Titanium has a smaller oil capacity (4 liters) compared to other variants which have a 5-liter capacity. So it may need more frequent oil changes. If you take your vehicle for long trips such as traveling across cities, it would also require more oil refills than usual.
What kind of oil does a Ford EcoSport take?
It is recommended that you use “fully synthetic engine oil” when changing fluids. It reduces friction and extends the engine’s life.
Tip #2 – Replace the oil filter
The filter is what keeps the oil-free from contaminants. Since it gradually collects dirt, it can get clogged – so you need to change it every six (6) months or 10,000 km mileage based on Ford’s recommendation.
What happens if you don’t change the oil filter?
Debris will build up faster in the oil. Initially, the dirt reduces the engine’s performance and fuel economy. But with enough time, it will corrode the engine and wear out its components.
A clogged oil filter also means that you would have to replace the oil more often, which can add up to the total maintenance cost.
Tip #3 – Check the tire pressure
Tires have to be properly inflated at all times. Besides helping you get from point A to point B, they allow more precise handling. With that said, car tires shouldn’t be overinflated or underinflated, as both can cause problems.
Underinflation increases the friction between the tire and the road, which significantly reduces its lifespan. It also affects the fuel economy of your EcoSport, makes rides less comfortable, and results in poor handling especially when driving around corners and sharp curbs.
Overinflation causes your tires to become too stiff or rigid. In a way, this also affects the handling of Ford EcoSport by reducing its traction. Overinflated tires also have a higher risk of a blowout when driven across potholes and road debris. So unless you want to end up with flat tires, they should have the right amount of pressure.
Tire pressure should be checked every two weeks or once a month.
What pressure should my tires be?
The recommended Ford EcoSport tire pressure is between 30 and 35 PSI. The former is intended for a less bouncy ride, while the latter reduces the vehicle’s fuel consumption. Keep in mind that when inflating the tires, they should have the same pressure on all sides.
Tip #4 – Replace the brake and transmission fluids
Unlike the engine oil which has to be changed frequently, other car fluids can be replaced less often.
Why do I need to change the brake fluid?
Changing the brake fluid helps with braking performance. This is especially true for vehicles like the Ford EcoSport which have an ABS or anti-lock braking system. Replacing it with a fresh batch also prevents contaminated brake fluids from damaging metal components, particularly with the ABS which is more sensitive to corrosion.
Ford suggests replacing the brake fluid once every three (3) years.
How often do you need to change the transmission fluid?
Manual and automatic transmission fluids can be replaced every 240,000 kilometers.
Tip #5 – Refill the engine coolant
The engine coolant is another means by which the powerplant stays cool when in use. Also known as antifreeze, it absorbs heat from the engine and transfers it to the radiator.
When should the engine coolant be changed?
The initial change can be done after the vehicle reaches a 240,000 km mileage. According to Ford’s maintenance guide, the EcoSport uses Motorcraft Super Plus Concentrated Orange Coolant.
The EcoSport may be the cheapest Ford vehicle in the market, but Php 1 million is still a hefty sum. If you can’t afford to buy a new vehicle every few years, or if you want to make sure that your EcoSport has a good resale value, regular car maintenance should be part of your routine.
