Ford Explorer – Variants comparison
It may seem like crossovers have not arrived until recently. However, the car segment was first introduced several years ago with the Toyota RAV4. Fast forward to today and crossovers have become the go-to for growing families and any buyer who prefers a mid-sized SUV.
One of the most popular choices in the segment is Ford Explorer. Being a crossover, it hits the sweet spot between a car and a full-sized SUV. There’s extra room for cargo and passengers. But because it has the underpinnings of a car, it allows for a smoother and more comfortable ride.
The sixth-generation Explorer was released locally on June 2019. Unfortunately, some variants had to be recalled due to faulty seats. Back in 2017, users also complained of sharp seat frames on an older model. This prompted the automaker to pull out from affected markets.
In spite of these controversies, the 2020 Explorer remains to be a solid option in the crossover segment. There are currently two variants sold in the Philippines – the 2.3L Limited EcoBoost and the 3.5L Sport V6 EcoBoost. In this article, we’ll walk you through an in-depth comparison of these two Ford Explorer variants.
Ford Explorer dimensions
For the most part, both variants are equal in measurement. Though it is worth mentioning that while their cargo space is only 595 liters – something that even a tiny Honda Brio can beat – this can still be expanded to 1,243 liters and 2,313 liters if you fold the third and second-row seats, respectively.
Its ride height is not as impressive as the larger Ford Expedition, but decent enough to get you through moderate floods. Perhaps the single advantage that the 3.5L variant has is a lighter curb weight, which on paper, would mean that it can pick up speeds faster than a heavier vehicle.
Ford Explorer exterior
The latest Ford Explorer may have been built on a new platform but it retains the design cues of the outgoing model. It still has a trapezoidal front grille and forward-sloping C-pillar. Only this time, it looks meaner and bolder from every angle.
Ford does away with the outdated box-like appearance of its yesteryears and replaces it with an edgier, more modern design. However, it doesn’t go overboard on the ‘macho’ and balances things off with sleek curves.
Externally, the differences between its two variants are mostly aesthetic. Limited EcoBoost gets chrome trims whereas Sport V6 EcoBoost has black, glossy trims that would look great on black or white body paint. The latter does have a few advantages when it comes to exterior features, such as heated turn signals. But all in all you won’t miss out even if you opted for the lower-priced variant.
Interior
Ford Explorer interior features
Once again, the Ford Explorer variants are virtually the same on the inside. But unlike their exteriors which have obvious differences in styling, both now have equally premium and comfortable interiors.
It provides ample headroom, shoulder room, and legroom that could rival the larger Ford Expedition in terms of cabin space. Limited EcoBoost merely lacks the contrasting red stitching found on Sport V6. Otherwise, it has the same full leather treatment and upmarket vibe.
You also get nearly identical features on either variant. Its highlights of Explorer specs sheet include the customizable digital cluster and the Sony audio system hooked to a 12-speaker setup. The crossover is packed with power features that make everything convenient, from power pedals to power windows. Besides power-adjustable seats, front passengers also get extra back and neck support for additional comfort.
Sport V6 is only slightly better when it comes to entertainment. The vehicle comes with a pair of headrest DVDs to keep rear passengers occupied with their favourite movies or TV series. However, all other interior features are a standard regardless of the variant you choose. So if you’re after function, either would be a good option.
Ford Explorer engine
They say that the most valuable things in life cannot be seen – they can be felt. We never would have thought that these wise words will also apply to the new Explorer. Its two variants come with totally different engines and drivetrains under the hood. And while we can’t see them, they deliver huge differences on performance.
Sport V6 EcoBoost has a more powerful engine that cranks out 26% more horsepower and about 14% more torque than Limited EcoBoost. To improve its handling and performance, Ford paired the V6 engine with an all-wheel drive system and sport tuned suspensions. This makes it easier to turn around sharp corners. The likelihood of body rolls is also lessened when driving on highways at high speeds.
Another advantage of the range-topper is adaptive cruise control. Besides improving fuel efficiency, it allows for a more relaxed driving experience by electronically controlling the car’s speed.
Ford Explorer safety
All safety specs have been included in both variants of the Ford Explorer. These include driver-assist features such as:
- Traction control
- Hill start assist
- Roll stability control
- Limited EcoBoost and Sport V6 are equally matched in the safety department.
Ford Explorer price
The Explorer price difference between the two is close to Php 1M, which can be surprising considering how they barely have distinctions. Make no mistake, Ford Explorer Limited EcoBoost is still an expensive vehicle at Php 2.798M. But for an entry-level option, it is adequately equipped with the necessary features without sacrificing safety, comfort, or the luxury of its interior.
By comparison, Ford Explorer Sport V6 EcoBoost offers few advantages for a steep price. However, if this means getting a powerful crossover that tips the performance scales – and one that provides better fuel economy to boot – then it’s a no brainer choice even if it will cost you Php 3.718M. Besides, we really can’t complain about the black trims which give it a more premium appearance than Limited EcoBoost.
No matter which variant you choose, one thing is certain. At the end of the day, you are getting a solid seven-seater and easily one of the best SUVs in the crossover segment.
