Getting warmer: All-new Toyota Avanza unveiled in Thailand, inches closer to PH
MANILA: The latest version of Toyota's popular Avanza is entering the Southeast Asian markets. Last year, the all-new Avanza was first launched in Indonesia — and as reported by our counterpart Zigwheels Malaysia — the MPV will arrive in Thailand in February.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
What are the notable changes in the all-new Toyota Avanza?
The all-new Avanza is underpinned by a new platform, powered by a new powertrain combo, and packed with advanced features. When will the all-new Avanza arrive in the Philippines?
No word yet, but the launch of the all-new Avanza in Indonesia and Thailand makes the model's Philippine arrival likely.Given these recent developments from our neighbors, many of us here in the Philippines are anticipating the arrival of the all-new Avanza. After all, the Avanza nameplate has always been known to bring Toyota dependability and practicality, wrapped in a package that is more compact than the Innova's.
Perhaps the most notable change with the all-new Avanza over its predecessor is its new Daihatsu New Global Architecture (DNGA) platform. A platform derived from Toyota's sibling company, this means the vehicle's construction is now changed from a semi-monocoque to a full unibody.
The all-new Avanza's change in underpinnings swaps the old rear-wheel-drive layout and solid rear axle construction, in favor of front-wheel-drive with front MacPherson struts and a rear torsion beam. A more car-like ride quality should be the byproduct of this change.
Another change is the Veloz name, which was previously an Avanza variant. In the all-new version, the Avanza Veloz is a separate model featuring all the bells and whistles. There is no word yet whether the Veloz model will arrive in Thailand.
The all-new Avanza must be the most tech-rich iteration to date. It features niceties such as: push-button start, keyless entry, a 7-inch digital instrument cluster, automatic climate control, Qi wireless charger, a nine-inch touchscreen head unit, 360-degree camera system, and an electronic parking brake.
Of course, the three rows of seats for seven are standard in this family hauler.
The equipment continues to the safety front, with six airbags, stability control, and Toyota Safety Sense (TSS). The suite of driver assistance systems includes front departure alert, autonomous emergency braking, pedal misapplication control, and lane-keeping assist.
In Thailand, the all-new Avanza will be powered by a 1.5-liter four-cylinder unit generating 106ps and 137Nm of torque. The engine is paired to a CVT unit that uses both belt and gear drive depending on the speed.
Didn't we say the all-new Avanza is already exciting the public?
