Hyundai Elantra - Top reasons to buy
The Hyundai Elantra is one of the country’s top-selling compact sedans. Hyundai last gave the Elantra a facelift back in 2017 where it received criticism for its P1 million price tag — a price range more common for SUVs and MPVs. This put it in a tough spot against Japanese models such as the Toyota Corolla and Honda Civic which had similar specs with the Elantra but were more affordable.
The vehicle recently returned to the market with an updated look and design, offering a more premium feel. Hyundai retained their P1 million price tag, however, the changes justify it this time.
The latest Elantra is currently available in three variants: the 1.6 GL MT, 1.6 GL AT, and 2.0 GLS AT. Here is a look at the Hyundai Elantra specs sheet:
Engine specs
1.6 GL 6MT | 1.6 GL 6AT | 2.0 GLS 6AT | |

For the Elantra, not much has really changed under the hood. The entry-level variants are still powered by the same 1.6L MPI engine also found in the previous generation and can be mated to either a 6-speed manual or automatic transmission. However, Hyundai has also added a new engine offering: a 2.0L MPI engine.
This engine packs a lot more punch than the standard offering, capable of generating 150 hp at 6,200 rpm and 192 Nm of torque at 4,000 rpm. While this is obviously an exciting prospect, Hyundai released minimal details online about this variant.
Besides this new engine, we listed a few more reasons why you should consider taking home the new Hyundai Elantra.
New design style
The biggest change on the Elantra would have to be its appearance. The new Elantra features Hyundai’s latest Fluidic Sculpture 2.0 design language. Inspired by European influences, this gave the vehicle a sleeker and more chic finish resulting in a more premium look.
The body is now more angular with an accentuated hood and side front fenders that also give it a sporty touch. The front grille was also swapped with a larger one, while the headlights and taillights were redesigned to become slimmer. To top it off, the now much shorter rear deck connects seamlessly with the rear windshield, succeeding in giving it that sleek finish.
Sturdier body
The design isn’t the only upgrade Hyundai worked on. The Korean automaker is known to manufacture the steel for their vehicles. Thanks to advancements in steel production, Hyundai was able to use higher quality steel materials for the Elantra, resulting in a sturdier and rigid build.
Drivers will also be happy to know that the steel used is of a lighter variety, making the vehicle both easier to maneuver and a smooth ride.
Driver-oriented dashboard
Hyundai explicitly intended for the controls and functions on the dashboard to be within the driver’s reach. Everything from the infotainment system and climate control system is angled towards the driver. This makes it easier to switch between controls even while multitasking on the road.
Excellent fuel economy
Drivers will also be happy to know that the 6-speed automatic transmission is very intuitive when shifting through gears. Thanks to the six forward gears, it keeps the vehicle fuel-efficient. The 1.6 GL AT variant can maintain 8 kilometers per liter while the 1.6 GL MT can maintain 9 kilometers per liter. This is both in city driving scenarios.

Hyundai retained the exact same price points as the 2017 version for the latest Elantra. For those who prefer an automatic transmission, you’ll have to shell out some more for the 1.6 GL AT variant.
There is currently no available information online regarding the price of the 2.0 GLS AT. We advise that you inquire at your nearest dealer instead.
Verdict
Hyundai succeeded in reinventing the Elantra into a sophisticated vehicle. Its cross between chic and sporty make it an eye-catching presence on the road, particularly for city driving.
However, the prices are still rather heavy for the sedan segment. The price ranges are still close to most entry-level SUVs. With minimal changes in the new Elantra, you are paying more for aesthetic changes with virtually the driving performance virtually the same with the 2017 version.
If you want a sleeker and premium-looking Elantra, then the version might be for you.
