Mercedes-AMG To Install F1 Tech In New 2.0L Turbo Inline-Four
MANILA: The present AMG 2.0-liter turbo inline-four is ready to get a new turbocharged engine based on the latest F1 technology. According to Motoring AU, Mercedes-AMG Chairman Tobias Moers has revealed that the new engine is developed by Mercedes-AMG High-Performance Powertrains. The same team built the 1.6-liter turbo-hybrid V6 engines that are being used by the F1 team presently.

The group is an expert in developing Energy Recovery Systems (ERS) and Kinetic Energy Recovery Systems (KERS), so the task was allocated in order to implement the technology effectively. By using this technology, it would help the team to downsize the engine from 2.0-liters to 1.6-liters, while still developing enough power. The engine won't be getting many advantages from electric turbochargers and E-boost and it is quite mandatory to add extra batteries or replace the standard 12V battery system.
Moers said, "There're great limitations to the technology. Sure, we've experimented with it but it needs more power than a standard car's 12V electrical system and would need to carry extra batteries. We tried adding an electric fan to a regular turbo which gave us some advantages – but not enough got it to be worth it."
"It's the next generation technology and we've squeezed everything we can and the turbocharging technology is at its very limit," added Moers.
The upcoming turbo inline-four engine will not only power the top variants like A-Class, and A45 but, will also find its application in future models such as B-, CLA-, and GLA-Class.The current engine needed a replacement because the current 2.0-liter AMG turbo inline-four is already exhausted and the turbo technology based engine is already at its limit.
No official date has been revealed yet for introducing the upcoming turbo inline-four.
