Mercedes-AMG’s M139 is a four-cylinder engine with 421 hp
MANILA: Even after 100 years since the first internal combustion engine was made, we still heavily rely on the same gasoline- and diesel-fed motors. While electric and other alternative energy resources are catching up slowly and steadily, the existence of these fuel burners has been one too long.
All the criticism aside, we have to admit that while the basic principle has been the same since a hundred years or so, there has been a significant improvement in power and performance of these ICEs. And with its newest four-cylinder M139, Mercedes-AMG has taken things to a whole new level.
Internal combustion engines with four-cylinders & a capacity of around 2.0-litre are generalised to pack a maximum power of somewhere between 200 to 300 hp, right? However, the M133 by Mercedes-AMG was something else in its own time when it produced 381 hp of maximum power and a peak torque of 475 Nm.
It was without a hair of doubt one of the most powerful engines out there with just four pots. But being one of the bests is not as good as being “the best”, is it? Hence, Mercedes-AMG had to get back to the factory. The result is the all-new Mercedes-AMG M139, a 2.0-litre four-cylinder motor that produces a maximum power of 421 hp and 500 Nm of peak torque.
Mercedes-AMG will offer the M139 in two different states of tune. While the standard variant will be producing 387 hp, the much powerful S model will churn out 421 hp. Both the variants use a twin-scroll turbocharger but feature different boost with the standard and S variants making 30.5 psi (2.1 bar) and 27.6 psi (1.9 bar), respectively. New additions on the Mercedes-AMG M139 include a new turbo, forged pistons, 180 degrees opposite orientation, and a forged crankshaft.
Just in case you’re heading towards the thought, no, the Mercedes-AMG 139 will not be a limited edition engine and will be powering the upcoming “45” lineup of the German automaker. The vehicles that will be housing the new engine very soon are Mercedes-AMG CLA 45, GLA 45, and A 45 models. While the M139 is a small engine when compared to other much larger offerings available in the market like the V6s and V8s, the M139 is quite a special commodity in its own sense as the mill is assembled by a single engineer at the Mercedes-AMG facility.
