MG boasts highest market share of ICE and EV sales in UK
MANILA: MG Motor UK reported that it is the fastest-growing mainstream car brand in the UK after it sold 5,452 units in September.
The British-born carmaker sells both internal combustion engine (ICE)-powered and electrified vehicles (EV), and cornered a combined overall market share of 32.7% percent. The share is highest of any manufacturer selling both ICE and EV models, MG added.
The carmaker credited the sales record to its long-range MG 5 EV, which became the seventh best-selling pure EV in the UK.
With the figure of 5,452, it was the first time the brand has achieved over 5,000 vehicle sales in a single month, and saw it sail past 20,000 in sales year-to-date. As for MG's year-on-year sales, it reportedly grew by 48.6% in a market that slumped by 34.4% against the same month last year.
Another key part of the sales success is MG’s dealer network, which is growing rapidly with over 40 outlets set up since the beginning of 2021.
The MG 5 EV is a wagon and EV version of the 5 subcompact sedan sold here. With the 5 EV's standard variants, they offer a range of around 344 kilometers with their fully-charged 52.5kWh batteries. The Long Range models net roughly 400km with their 61.1kWh batteries.
Alongside the 5 EV, MG offers EV versions of its ICE models which are sold locally, such as the ZS EV. The electric crossover is capable of about 262km with its 44.5kWh battery.
Also part of the lineup is the HS Plug-In Hybrid. All models backed up by the manufacturer's comprehensive seven-year warranty and fast-developing dealer network.
“September 2021 was a milestone month for MG, beating all previous records. It’s clear that our range of great value, well-equipped and stylish cars are in tune with market demands and our aim to offer affordable EVs to everyone is also firing car buyers’ imagination," MG UK Commercial Director Guy Pigounakis said.
“We have an engaged and excited dealer network and have been able to provide the right cars at the right time, with a focus on generating great business for our retailers and a commitment to offering terrific cars that are just what the market demands
This is part of our commitment to long-term, sustainable growth and there are some very exciting developments to come over the next few months,” Pigounakis added.
Locally, MG Philippines reported that it has sold more than 10,000 units last July, about three years since its launch in the local market.
