MG GT scores zero stars in latest ANCAP test

MANILA: The MG GT has received a zero-star rating from the Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP).

A number of deficiencies on the sedan’s physical crash protection and active collision avoidance performance were observed by ANCAP in its latest assessment. The evaluator attributes this to the lack of safety systems that have long been standard in new cars.

According to ANCAP Chief Executive Officer Carla Hoorweg, the Chinese carmaker “misjudged the safety expectations of today’s consumers.”

Four key areas were evaluated, and the MG GT (also known as MG5 in Australia) scored only 37 percent in adult occupant protection, 58 percent in child occupant protection, 42 percent in vulnerable road user protection, and 13 percent in safety assist.

The sedan provided “poor” protection to the driver's and rear passengers' chest and legs in the frontal offset and full width frontal tests. Penalties were imposed for hazards behind the dashboard structure, chest deflection, and seatbelt loading exceeding injury limits.

In both the frontal and side impact tests, three of the four dummies received “weak” protection, implying that the rear-seat occupants' safety was not given enough consideration during the design process.

The base variant also does not have seatbelt pretensioners or load limiters installed in the front or rear seating positions. Furthermore, there is no center airbag to protect passengers in side-impact crashes, no lane support or blind spot monitoring functionality, limited autonomous emergency braking performance, and no modern technology to monitor driver alertness or children unintentionally left in the car.

Aside from the MG GT, the Mahindra Scorpio also got a zero-star rating in the latest ANCAP.

“The MG 5 and Mahindra Scorpio were released into the Australasian market for the first time this year, yet it’s clear that their safety offerings are some generations behind what we see with almost every new car on sale today. This is a stark reminder that not all cars offer the same level of safety – even when they’re brand-new models,” Hoorweg stated.

“With our independent test results now in hand, we hope to see significant improvements made to these models to have them more closely align with the safety credentials offered by their competitors,” the ANCAP chief added.
