Polestar Officially becomes Volvo's Performance Arm
MANILA: An astute mind without a performance arm is indeed an incomplete feeling and therefore Mercedes has AMG, Audi has Quattro, BMW has GmbH and now Volvo has Polestar. The two Swedish auto entities, Volvo and Polestar Performance AB have signed a deal wherein the latter has been fully acquired by former to become company's performance division as a result of which we can now expect more Polestar versions of Volvo models including performance oriented hybrids as well.
The racing team Polestar has shared a long relationship with the Swedish car maker since 1994 as the Polestar has given Volvo BTCC championships in 1995 with the 850 and in 1998 with the S40. Polestar's first official road car collaboration with Volvo was with the S60 Polestar edition and now this partnership aims to sell 750 units of Polestar S60 and V60 wagons. Further, raising the numbers to 1000 to 1500 performance Volvos in the coming years.
The Volvo-Polestar is currently working on the twin engine system found in the all-new XC90 T8. This engine is powered by a supercharged and turbocharged 2.0-litre engine paired with an electric motor which puts out 400 PS of power. But now with the Volvo- Polestar hands on it you can expect the same engine to put out more than 400 PS with lower emissions.
"We are extremely satisfied with the way the performance business with Volvo has developed. But we are a racing team first and foremost. This is an opportunity to return our full attention to our core business – to develop and race Volvo cars," said Christian Dahl. "Driving a Volvo Polestar is a special experience," added Volvo CEO Håkan Samuelsson. "We have decided to bring this experience to more Volvo drivers, placing the full resources of Volvo behind the development of Polestar as the model name for our high performance cars."
