Potentially faulty sunroofs force Mercedes-Benz to recall 750,000 units
MANILA: Due to sunroofs that might end up detached from the car and fly off, Mercedes-Benz has recalled 750,000 units of its C-Class, E-Class, CLK-Class, and CLS-Class models that were manufactured between 2001 and 2011.
According to the German automobile manufacturer, the affected units are carrying a sunroof that could potentially get detached and cause accident and injuries to both the passengers inside the car and other on the road. Mercedes-Benz has issued the list of affected vehicles to the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The list could be found here.
Starting February 14, 2020, Mercedes-Benz will begin contacting the affected customers and replace the sunroof at no cost. The reason behind the recall is the glue that Mercedes-Benz used to fix the sunroof on its cars. The very bonding element is said to deteriorate with the passage of time, and hence, can lead to the sunroof being detached.
While good 750,000 units of the C-Class, E-Class, CLK-Class, and CLS-Class models have been recalled in the US, it is yet to be seen whether or not the German automaker recalls global units of the same models. Affected owners who have already spent money on the faulty sliding roof will be able to seek reimbursements from the automaker.
Recently, Mercedes-Benz signed a $20 million civil penalty agreement following the improper management of its U.S. vehicle recalls. As per the agreement, the automaker will now pay $13 million. Moreover, in case it doesn't follow the agreement, another $7 million fine will be there. This was a result of the automaker not submitting reports, informing the affected owners, and launching timely recalls, reported the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
