The overall user experience inside the 2023 Volvo EX90 is designed on the principle of complexity made simple, avoiding information overload. Alongside these, the cabin is made from sustainable materials. It is not only the most technologically advanced Volvo vehicle ever made; it is also the driver's entry ticket to a larger ecosystem of services and features that can improve their quality of life and enable them to fully benefit from going all-electric.
Regardless of whether customers choose to purchase a Volvo EX90 online or in person, it represents Volvo's new attitude toward ownership. Customers can choose to lease it, purchase it outright, or access it through a subscription service.
The Volvo Cars app makes it possible and simpler than ever before for drivers to find a public charging station, pay for charging, manage smart charging at home, plan a new over-the-air software update, or just want to access their vehicle through keyless entry.
Bright screens inside the completely electric 2023 Volvo EX90 provide passengers fast access to all features and provide clear, situation-specific information. A seamless link between drivers' cars and their homes is made possible through first-rate connectivity and infotainment. A large selection of Google services and apps are already integrated into the Volvo EX90, including the ability to operate the vehicle remotely from home.
“The Volvo EX90 is our vision of a large family SUV in the electric age,” said Jim Rowan, Volvo Chief Executive. “Born electric and software-defined, it demonstrates what future Volvo cars will stand for in terms of safety, technology, sustainability, design and creating a more personal experience for every customer.”
The 2023 Volvo EX90 is an automobile that marks the beginning of a new era for Volvo Cars and is the ideal partner for a more environmentally friendly family living. Thanks to a number of smart technologies and services, charging has never been simpler.
Drivers may choose from hundreds of thousands of public charging stations across the world, pay for charging, and monitor charging progress in one simple interface thanks to the full integration of public charging in the Volvo Cars app. In the meantime, they can use Google Maps in the infotainment system's center screen to check the current availability of charging stations.
The Volvo EX90 will support Plug and Charge. Once available, this means the car can simply be plugged into a public charger that supports this technology and it will start charging automatically, with payment taken care of as well.
Volvo is constantly extending the scope of its charging offer by adding more fast-charging networks to its ecosystem of connected public charging, allowing drivers of electric Volvo cars to charge conveniently at attractive rates.
As a starting point for Volvo’s energy management offer, the Volvo Cars app enables drivers to reduce their CO2 emissions, save money and lower their impact on the environment.
Initially available in selected markets in the future, the carmaker’s energy management offer includes a bi-directional wall box and an energy management system that helps users monitor and optimize their household’s energy consumption. Volvo experts will oversee the entire installation.
Through the smart charging feature coming to the Volvo Cars app, the 2023 Volvo EX90 can be charged at the best available time from a sustainability and family economy perspective. The energy can be used later, perhaps during peak times when prices are higher and the energy mix less sustainable.
This is because the 2023 Volvo EX90 is the brand’s first car with all the necessary hardware to enable bi-directional charging. It is a technology whereby users can use the car battery as an extra energy supply, for example to power the home, other electric devices or another electric Volvo car. Volvo plans to make bi-directional charging available in the future, starting with selected markets.
Volvo is also looking into the possibility of allowing customers to sell energy back to the grid, plugged in collectively to form a virtual power plant. This could contribute to a more efficient and stable system with a lower CO2 footprint, while creating revenues for drivers and the company alike.
Inside the 2023 Volvo EX90, a 14.5-inch center screen is the gateway to one of the most advanced infotainment systems on offer, with Google built in and 5G connectivity as standard, where available. Where 5G is not available, Volvo will partner with leading service providers to offer the best possible service around the globe. Finding one’s destination, streaming favorite music, installing favorite apps and much more are a breeze thanks to the intuitive setup.
Additionally, the overall user experience inside the 2023 Volvo EX90 is designed on the principle of complexity made simple, avoiding information overload. The displays in the center stack and in front of the driver provide information in a smart way that can be customized the way anyone prefers. The 2023 Volvo EX90 will also be compatible with wireless Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.
Whether the vehicle is in manual, assisted or – in the future – autonomous driving mode, the driving mode will always be clearly displayed and recognizable. That way users can avoid so-called mode confusion and contribute to a focused, safe and enjoyable drive.
The Volvo EX90 will be the first Volvo car to feature Dolby Atmos, which will be delivered by a reference-quality Bowers & Wilkins audio system featuring 25 speakers for immersive sound throughout the cabin.
The EX90's interior is deeply anchored in Scandinavian design's core principles of simplicity, wellbeing, and natural sources.
There is a new paradigm in automotive luxury, just as traditional measurements like horsepower and acceleration have been replaced by charging time and range. Flash is no longer preferred by Volvo, and a luxurious interior is no longer simply identified by the aroma of fresh animal leather.
“We’ve chosen materials based on our values,” said Cecilia Stark, Senior Design Manager at Volvo Cars. “These choices leave behind old-fashioned automotive luxury and express our Scandinavian foundations. With the Volvo EX90 we take customer well-being as a design starting point.”
A progressive material that Volvo has named Nordico is used throughout the cabin. Nordico is a contemporary expression of Scandinavian values and sets a new standard for premium interior design.
Created from textiles made from recycled material such as PET bottles, as well as bio-attributed material from responsibly managed forests in Sweden and Finland, Nordico is a progressive and technically advanced material.
Speaking of forests: inside the 2023 Volvo EX90 are FSC-certified wood panels around the cabin. They are nicely back-lit with warm light that creates a Scandinavian living room atmosphere and evokes the Nordic wilderness.
Customers of the 2023 Volvo EX90 also have the choice of a wool blend seat finish, which has been certified in accordance with stringent sustainability criteria on concerns of animal welfare, the environment, and society.
The 2023 Volvo EX90 uses more recycled plastics in order to use fewer limited primary resources, keeping with Volvo's circularity goals. The Volvo EX90 has about 50 kilograms of recycled plastics and bio-based materials in addition to the recycled PET bottles. With that, Volvo has used the most non-primary fossil-based materials in its lineup, raising the bar for the future. The carpets incorporate the idea of circularity because they contain some recycled polyamide.
Taking things beyond materials, the 2023 Volvo EX90 interior can be personalized in atmosphere and appearance as the customer chooses between seven different ‘rooms’ that synchronize the interior decor and upholstery with the exterior colors.
Each room, specially created by Volvo designers, provides a different character and offers a distinct ambience to suit buyers’ tastes. Each room is inspired by aspects of the Scandinavian lifestyle and its symbiotic relationship with the beautiful nature that surrounds the North.
“The interior design and composition of the Volvo EX90 continues decades of iteration and innovation,” said Cecilia Stark. “We see interior composition as a learning process that will continue overtime based on your feedback, in-house innovation and new responsible sourcing opportunities.”
