Suzuki S-Presso vs. Toyota Wigo: New & exciting or old & reliable

The affordable hatch segment has gotten even hotter with a new player in town— the Suzuki S-Presso. The bold and rugged SUV-like styling of the S-Presso is a potential contender to the classic, sleek-looking Toyota Wigo. And if you are on a hunt for a starter car or looking for a hatchback, you’re in luck! Here, we compare the two vehicles to see which one gives better bang for your buck.

Suzuki S-Presso vs. Toyota Wigo: Dimensions

When it comes to size, the Suzuki offering is definitely more compact in size compared to the Wigo. The S-Presso is significantly shorter and much narrower by 95 mm and 80 mm, respectively. The only redeeming quality of the S-Presso when it comes to size is its height which is 45 mm taller than the Wigo. With its smaller frame, expect the wheelbase to be shorter as well—by a significant 70 mm.

What does this all mean? It means less legroom and shoulder room for the S-Presso. And given that both compact vehicles accommodate five passengers, the Suzuki hatch will be a tighter squeeze. On the other hand, Pinoy buyers who are more than the average 5’5” tall will not find the Wigo a comfortable ride. Not just because of the compact size, but the headroom will be a problem. Given the fact that both cars have the same ground clearance, the S-Presso has a better headspace by as much as 45 mm.

Suzuki S-Presso vs. Toyota Wigo: Exterior

When it comes to exterior features, the new Suzuki hatchback offering is more interesting to the eye. The S-Presso is being marketed as a kei crossover and thus boasts rugged features. It has a 4 horizontal trapezoid panel for a grille flanked by ‘gripping’ design headlamps. Below it is a black matte resin bumper. On the side are angular wheel arches for a more robust look. At the rear are taillights that are pushed significantly towards the corner and are placed much higher than the regular hatch. The S-Presso, however, lacks the rear spoiler, roof rails, and shark fin antenna commonly found in crossover SUVs.

For the Toyota Wigo, it looks like your typical hatchback. It has a classic and very straightforward design. But despite the simplistic exterior, it does boast of added trims like front fog lights and robust air dam at the front. At the rear is a massive spoiler with an LED stop lamp.

Suzuki S-Presso vs. Toyota Wigo: Interior

When it comes to interior comforts, the Wigo is a runaway winner. The infotainment system of the Toyota hatch comes with a navigation system already and is paired with four speakers placed both in front and on the rear. Plus, all four windows of the Wigo are push buttons. On the other hand, The S-Presso has an audio touchscreen display accompanied by two front speakers. Power windows are only available in the front which means rear windows are adjusted manually.

Suzuki S-Presso vs. Toyota Wigo: Engine

The Suzuki S-Presso is powered by a 1.0-liter, 3-cylinder, 12-valve engine that delivers a decent 67 hp of power and 90 Nm of torque. The engine is mated to a 5-speed manual transmission with no option for an automatic, at least for now. This Suzuki engine is more powerful than the Toyota’s 1.0-liter, 3-cylinder in-line, 12-valve, DOHC with VVT-I engine that churns out 65 Hp of output and 89 Nm of torque. However, the difference is not that significant and both cars can adequately perform as you navigate your way on the packed roads of the Metro.

Suzuki S-Presso vs. Toyota Wigo: Safety

For safety features, the Suzuki S-Presso has a lot more to offer than the Toyota Wigo. Though both cars have a rigid frame design that allows efficient absorption and dispersion of energy in an event of a collision, the S-Presso have a few more added safety features. The bare basic ABS with EBD that shortens the braking distance by distributing force to all four wheels are lacking on the Wigo. The S-Presso is also more child-friendly with its ISOFIX and childproof rear doors while the Wigo only has the childproof rear doors. When it comes to driver-assist features, both are lacking for the two hatchback sedans.

Suzuki S-Presso vs. Toyota Wigo: Price

In terms of variants and prices, the Suzuki S-Presso is only available in one model and has a suggested retail price of Php 518,000. On the other hand, the Toyota Wigo is offered in three different models. Below is the price matrix for S-Presso and Wigo.

Clearly, the S-Presso is more affordable than any of the Wigo variants. The lowest Wigo E MT variant is more expensive by Php 39,000 than the S-Presso with the top-of-the-line TRD AT variant pricier by Php 178,000.

Suzuki S-Presso vs. Toyota Wigo: Verdict

When it comes to safety and affordability, the Suzuki S-Presso is hands down, the winner as it gives you more value for your money. It is perfect for people eyeing to buy their starter car. This is especially true if you are eyeing to buy a family car, as the S-Presso is more child-friendly than the Wigo with ISOFIX feature which lets you attach your child safety seat in place. Also, if you want the rugged look of a crossover to reflect your outdoorsy personality, then the Suzuki S-Presso will be more suited for you. But if you like the classic, clean look of the sedan and interior comforts to go with it, then the Toyota Wigo is more suited for you.
