Updated Jaguar XE gets new diesel engine with mild hybrid tech
MANILA: Jaguar has just refreshed the first-generation XE compact executive sedan and it is a major upgrade as it gets a 2.0-liter four-cylinder Ingenium diesel. It is now a mild hybrid electric vehicle (MHEV) as well.
“The updated Jaguar XE features a selection of enhancements which make it an even better choice for buyers. The new MHEV diesel powertrain brings an electrified engine option to XE for the first time and delivers improved efficiency combined with refined performance. Meanwhile, cutting-edge technologies, such as our new Pivi Pro infotainment system and latest Cabin Air Ionisation technologies, provide greater connectivity, convenience and wellbeing for all for occupants,” said Jaguar Colin Chief Product Engineer Kirkpatrick.
This new diesel engine has variable vane geometry turbocharger technology. At low engine speeds the turbocharger vanes rotate to narrow the opening between them, increasing exhaust gas velocity and boosting pressure, which provides rapid torque response and enhanced acceleration. At high engine speeds, the vanes open, ensuring maximum exhaust gas flow to deliver peak power while maintaining optimum efficiency.
Its MHEV system uses a Belt-integrated Starter Generator (BiSG) situated in the engine bay to harvest energy lost when slowing and braking. The energy is then stored in a 48V lithium-ion battery located beneath the rear loadspace. Together, it puts out 201hp and can take the XE from 0-96kph in just 6.9 seconds.
Other features of this new diesel engine include a new 2,500-bar piezo common-rail injection system which delivers even finer control of fuel delivered into the cylinders, steel pistons (allowing for a more compact, lower friction design as well as increased capability to withstand higher peak pressures), more intricate and thorough integration of cooling channels for improved thermal management, and a thermal expansion rate closer to that of the iron cylinder liners for improved clearance control, both enhancing cooling and reducing friction for better efficiency.
Customers who prefer to use gasoline engines can still choose between the 247hp/365Nm of torque version, or the more powerful one with 296hp/400Nm of torque.
New in the cabin is the Pivi Pro infotainment system that uses the integrated 10-inch central touchscreen. It now uses two multi- functional LED rotary controllers for intuitive operation of key vehicle functions. It also comes with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Contributing to the fresh interior look is the new split-rim steering wheel, enhanced cabin air ionization with Nanoe technology that removes allergens and unpleasant odors.
“We are delighted to introduce our upgraded and streamlined 21MY XF and XE ranges. With significant enhancements to technology and design for the new XF, and further refinements building on the success of XE, customers get more of the features they love and new features that add even more desirability and excitement,” said Jaguar Land Rover UK Managing Director Rawdon Glover,.
