Toyota Issues Recall - 3.37 Million Cars Affected This Time
MANILA: Just when Toyota is floating in the automotive news headlines for its absolutely dynamic and stunning C-HR, it has to divert its focus towards a glitch. The Japanese auto giant has recalled 3.37 million cars worldwide due to possible defects in the airbags and emission control. Recently, Honda also issued a recall for Honda and Acura cars over fault on Takata airbags equipped in different models. The word of relief for Takata is that this time there is no involvement of the renowned airbags manufacturer. The recall, made by Toyota, this time, is worldwide and the manufacturer will be issuing a recall notice to intimate the owners of the affected vehicles.
While the company has estimated 2.87 million Toyota cars to be affected by some fault in the emission control, another 1.43 million units are expected to have a separate issue comprising airbag inflators, which need to be repaired immediately. With this, the Japanese company has guessed that approximately 930,000 cars are affected with both the potential defects. The company has cleared the air on the recall by citing that the recall has been made pro-actively to ensure the best of the safety of the occupants and no fatal accidents over these issues have been registered yet. Recently, Tesla Model S met with an accident when it was on auto-pilot mode proving fatal for the 40 years old Mr. Brown, the driver of the crashed car.
In its notification in regards to the recall, Toyota mentioned that its Corolla, Auris hatch, and Prius models manufactured between the years 2006 and 2015 have been found with evaporative fuel emissions control units, which are prone to cracks and further lead to fuel leaks over the time period. Describing this recall summary, a Toyota authority stated that of the 2.87 million cars affected with faulty emission control system units, approximately 713,000 are in Europe, 35,000 are sold in China, 1.55 million are in its domicile and the rest of 568,000 units are in some other parts of the globe.
Talking about the 1.43 million units in regards of recall over airbag inflators, Lexus CT200h and Prius models produced and sold between 2010 and 2012 have been found with a small crack in a weld which can lead to the separation of the inflator chambers. Toyota authorities have estimated to sold as many as 482,000 units with this fault in the U.S. market. The company is taking this matter on priority but since this is a massive recall involving multiple countries, Toyota might take some time to spot the affected units and arrange rectification for them. The Japanese giant would have to shed anything between $10 million to $40 million in the entire rectification process. We hope the process completes successfully as early as possible before it proves to be fatal for anyone!
