Volvo gives select models stylish monochrome treatment in Europe

MANILA: The all-electric Volvo EC40 and EX40 — as well as the hybrid engine-equipped XC40 — get Black Edition trims in Europe.

Per the Swedish carmaker, the aforementioned models now don a sleek monochrome look thanks to an all-black exterior styling. Featured is the Onyx Black paintwork as well as a blacked-out high-gloss front grille, Volvo emblem, and tailgate badging.

Also included is a set of 20-inch five-spoke high-gloss black alloy wheels.

Available specifications

The Black Edition Volvo EC40, EX40, and XC40 are available in Plus and Ultra specifications. The former comes with features like a heated steering wheel and outer rear seats, front parking sensors, a powered driver’s seat with memory settings, an advanced air-purification system, and Connect suede textile/Microtech upholstery.

Further, the all-electric Volvo EC40 and EX40 Black Editions also have an energy-efficient heat pump for the climate control system that helps maximize driving range.

Meanwhile, the Ultra specification for the three nameplates comes with all the features the Plus grades offer and adds technologies such as a 360-degree surround-view parking camera system and active bending pixel LED headlights with adaptive shadow technology.

A powered passenger seat and power-folding rear headrests are also provided, together with a tilt and slide panoramic sunroof (EX40 and XC40 models).

The audio system is a 600-Watt, 12-speaker Harman Kardon set-up with Dolby Pro Logic II surround sound.

Powertrain choices

The Black Edition Volvo EC40 and EX40 prove that the new variants are more than just a gimmick. Going beyond the typical cosmetic upgrades, the Gothenburg-based carmaker expanded the powertrain options for the crossover and sport utility vehicle (SUV).

In addition to the rear-wheel-driven 252-horsepower (hp) Single Motor Extended Range grade, Volvo added an all-wheel-drive Twin Motor Performance variant. It delivers some 442 hp as well as a remapped accelerator response. It also gets a Performance drive mode to help the person behind the wheel enjoy the extra power to the full.

On the other hand, the gasoline-fed hybrid Volvo XC40 Black Edition is offered with the B3 and B4 mild-hybrid petrol powertrains packing some 163 horses and 197 hp, respectively.

Pricing

The Volvo EC40 Black Edition as well as the EX40 Black Edition are priced from £55,055-£63,105 (approximately P4.121 million-P4.724 million).

On the other hand, the Volvo XC40 Black Edition has a sticker price that ranges from £40,720-£46,620 (around P3.048 million-P3.490 million).

Volvo Cars Philippines is yet to announce a similar update on its current roster. The company’s local lineup consists of battery-electric models like the C40 Recharge and XC40 Recharge.

Mild hybrid vehicles are also available from Volvo’s local wing in the form of the XC90, XC60, and XC40 SUV models. The S90 sedan also packs a hybrid powertrain.
