Volvo records 600,000 units global sales in 2018
MANILA: Volvo, the popular Swedish automaker, has set a new global record by breaking the 600,000 sales mark in 2018. And since it was founded in 1927, this is the highest ever number achieved by the company. It went on to better its own sales record for the fifth consecutive year.
As per the yearly sales numbers, 571,577 cars were sold in 2017. But this time around, the sales have increased by 12.4 percent, taking the number to 642,253 units in 2018. In fact, in December 2018 itself, the company’s global sales count went up to 60,157 cars.
The manufacturer had renewed its product portfolio last year, which is the main reason behind the growth in sales globally. The award-winning SUV-line up has made its mark in all over its core regions, like Europe, the US, and China.
The sales of Volvo cars in Europe increased by 6.4 percent over the previous year and the total number of cars sold is 317,838 unit. Volvo’s two popular SUVs - V60 and XC40 led to this sales improvement as the frontline models. The company claims that around 30,000 units of the total number were these two models.
The US sales count of the Volvo cars rose up to 98,263 units in 2018, which means the sales have grown by 20.6 percent in comparison to the previous year. The huge demand of the SUV in this region has led the manufacturer capture such a huge chunk of customers. The XC60 and US-assembled S60 are the main contributors to the increase in the sales count.
Around 14 percent growth in sales has been registered in China, where the total number is 130,593 units during the year. The demand of the XC60 and S90 cars is the main reason behind such a huge number and the company sold around 12,000 units of the two cars in the region in 2018.
