Want a safe van? Get yourself a Toyota Alphard
MANILA: There is no denying to the fact the Toyota makes and sells some really safe and secure vehicles around the globe. We’ve all known Toyota cars like Rush, Vios, and others who have grabbed five-star safety ratings in ASEAN NCAP and JNCAP in recent times. But Toyota also makes some luxury vans like Alphard and how safe are they? Well, as you would have already guessed it from the title of the story, the Alphard is one hell of a van in terms of safety as per the recent performance in JNCAP.
In order to test the safety quotient of the van, JNCAP put the much luxurious version, i.e., Vellfire, under the hammer. To no surprise, the van did remarkably good in all of the occupant protection, preventive safety, and pedestrian protection tests. Furthermore, as the Alphard is pretty much a twin of the Vellfire, the former should also be a van safe as a house.
Taking into consideration the particular scores, the Toyota Vellfire scored 90.82 points in occupant protection and 73.99 points for pedestrian protection which clearly shows how safe the van actually is. Moreover, JNCAP praised the van for the fact that its doors could still be easily opened even after an accident.
Thanks to the Toyota Safety Sense (TSS), the Vellfire scored high scores in all the safety and protection tests. Features like emergency braking come as a part of the Toyota Safety Sense and also work at night which further increases the safety quotient of the van. With the TSS becoming more and more effective and gathering acclaim around the world, we hope for the Japanese automaker to introduce the safety suite in its offerings for the Philippine market as well.
In the Philippines, the Toyota Alphard gets a 3.5-litre six-cylinder DOHC with Dual VVT-i engine that makes 296 PS of maximum power and a peak torque of 361 Nm. The van comes with an eight-speed automatic transmission and wears disc brakes on all four wheels. Safety features on the Philippine-spec Alphard include driver, passenger, front side, curtain shield, and knee (driver) SRS airbags, ABS with EBD and brake assist vehicle stability control, hill-start assist control, and others.
