Inaugural Honda Road Safety Summit part of global effort to minimize traffic-related fatalities

MANILA: The inaugural Honda Road Safety Summit — staged recently in collaboration with Honda Foundation Incorporated and the Municipality of Pasig — is part of a global effort that aims to reduce traffic-related fatalities.

Honda Safety Driving Center (HSDC) Section Manager Herminio Lomibao confirmed that the said safety summit is one of the programs initiated by the Japanese brand’s local arm to achieve its goal of realizing zero traffic collision fatalities involving Honda vehicles by 2050.

“This is one of the strategies that we are doing to achieve that goal,” Lomibao verified.

The Honda Road Safety Summit is a program that aims to develop a “road safety mindset” and riding and driving proficiency among road users through partnerships with local government units.

More than 500 road users — comprised of motorcycle and automobile enthusiasts, local government unit employees, traffic enforcers, Tricycle Operators and Drivers’ Association members, and students — participated in the event.

On top of the road safety seminars and motorcycle riding simulation booths, Honda also staged test rides and displayed some of its products from motorcycles, cars, and even power products such as portable generators and tools for agricultural needs.

“Honda Foundation does these kinds of activities… to extend our reach, thereby when more road users are knowledgeable, educated, and aware about road safety, it can help lessen the overall road crash incidents,” Lomibao said.

“It is possible… since most of the road crash incidents are avoidable. Human error, 80 percent of the cause of road crash incidents — at least for the Metro Manila data,” he explained.

Lomibao also revealed that more safety-related activities are in the pipeline with programs for Honda motorcycle and automobile dealers, schools, rider and driver groups, as well as other industry stakeholders that aim to make our roads safer.
