Chery Tiggo 5x

On the inside, the Chery Tiggo 5X feels sophisticated, with a neat and simple layout for the dashboard. It doesn’t set new benchmarks in design, but it simply feels nice to be in.

The large three-spoke multi-functional steering wheel, as well as pod-like instrument console with a neat MID, tucked in between might not generate a wow factor, but the meters are in line with your vision quite well. The centre console looks wide and premium, thanks to the slightly curved and vertical AC vents and a touchscreen infotainment system in between them. The controls for automatic climate control are positioned nicely below it in a simple manner.

While the Chery Tiggo 5X covers all the essentials like push-button start with keyless entry, touchscreen infotainment system, height-adjustable driver’s seat, and automatic climate control, considering its premium positioning, it could have been equipped with more features. On the other hand, space on the inside is optimum for five passengers.

The Chery Tiggo 5X does look quite contemporary and has a modern appeal to it, however, the overall design is not something which stands out from the crowd. It looks normal, but not dated, to say the least.

At the front, Chery Tiggo 5X has an upright stance which goes well with the trapezoidal grille with chrome surrounds. The angular headlamps, which do come with projector bulbs and daytime running LEDs, with rounded edges on the outside do flank the grille quite nicely, making the front look wide. The curvy housing for the fog lamps again enhances its visual appeal even more.

The side profile of the Chery Tiggo 5X too has a conventional air to it, with an aerodynamic design characterized by a nice character line flowing sideways as well as bulging wheel arches. The machined alloy wheels as well as chrome bordering on the window-line increase its premium quotient. At the rear too, Chery Tiggo 5X has a simple design with curved tail lamps which are edges towards the inside. The presence of one exhaust port on either side do make it look big, along with black cladding surrounding them.

For a weighted SUV, the Chery Tiggo 5X has old school mannerisms in the way it feels behind the steering wheel. There is a slight body roll and the too-light steering setup does not help matters either. While it is not so engaging vehicle to drive, it certainly is a comfortable one, with pleasantly soft suspension setup.

The Chery Tiggo 5X is powered by a 2.0-litre four cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine under its hood. Coupled to a 5-speed manual gearbox or the CVT as an option , the engine churns out a maximum power output of 139 PS and a peak torque output of 182 Nm, which do make it not so delightful by today’s standards.

However, the other engine option – a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine, feels sprightly and produces 152 PS of power and 205 Nm of torque. This engine too is offered with both 5-speed manual and CVT gearboxes.

With the presence of essential safety features like four airbags, ABS with EBD, hill hold control, front and rear parking sensors with camera and tire pressure monitoring system, the Chery Tiggo 5X feels adequately equipped, if not the best.

The Chery Tiggo 5X might not have turned out to be an exceptional vehicle at the end, with the uninspiring styling on the outside and not so appealing driving dynamics. However, for people seated on the inside, it feels plush and comfortable, making it a decent vehicle to be chauffeured in.
