Fancy family MPV: Hyundai Stargazer X
The Hyundai Stargazer X competes with other range-topping MPVs such as the Mitsubishi Xpander Cross
Sometime last year, Hyundai Motor Philippines Incorporated rolled out the Stargazer X — a multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) that boasts sport-utility vehicle (SUV)-like appointments while still offering the convenience and comfort of a standard family car.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
What powers the Hyundai Stargazer X?
The Hyundai Stargazer X is powered by a 1.5-liter gasoline engine mated to Hyundai's IVT.How much is the Hyundai Stargazer?
The Hyundai Stargazer sells for P1.348 million.Just recently, we were able to test it out through a media drive staged by the South Korean car brand's local arm.
Here are our thoughts about Hyundai’s fancy family MPV.
Handsome daily driver
The Hyundai Stargazer X is based on the original Stargazer MPV, so it’s pretty obvious where the vehicle got its modern and somewhat futuristic styling. However, the former pushes the envelope further as it dons more defined features that separate it from its standard sibling.
At the fore of the Hyundai Stargazer X is a more defined fascia. Its small, yet sculptured hood, adds dimensions to the otherwise plain and unpretentious bonnet of the family ferry. Further, its radiator grille now has a three-dimensional design with bits of the framework popping out and are adorned with chrome appliques. It also wears a more robust lower front bumper with a matte finish.
The flanks of the Hyundai Stargazer X also get new features. Here, we see additional components typically found on SUVs that come in the form of black wheel arches and claddings under each door. They not only serve as cosmetic upgrades but also help protect the MPV from minor surface damage due to road debris.
It also gets a black roof paired with roof rails. However, would-be owners should pay caution as written on the said rack is the phrase “DO NOT APPLY LOAD.”
Hyundai also gave the Stargazer X a set of 17-inch sporty alloy wheels.
From the side, the increased ground clearance of the Hyundai Stargazer X is also noticeable. The higher stance of the MPV provides drivers with a certain level of confidence, allowing them to have faith that the vehicle can easily conquer common urban obstacles — such as steep speed bumps or relatively deep potholes.
The rear end of the Hyundai Stargazer X features a sporty spoiler mounted on the MPV’s roof. Under which is its third brake lamp. It also has a large rear glass that helps the driver see better when backing up or maneuvering in tight spots. Displayed at the center of the tailgate is the “STARGAZER X” nameplate, while underneath it is a defined rear bumper that echoes the styling cues of what could be found at the front.
Overall the character offered by the Hyundai Stargazer X is more muscular and athletic compared to the regular Stargazer, which is why it might be perfect for Filipino families with an outgoing and active lifestyle.
Speaking of which, during the said media drive, Hyundai Motor Philippines Incorporated showed just how well the Stargazer X can adapt to the needs of modern Filipino families. Shown in the photo below is a glamping setup — for those who want to enjoy the outdoors in style.
Kid-friendly cabin
It’s not surprising to see why many car buyers will consider the Hyundai Stargazer X when looking for a family car.
Children will find the cabin of the Hyundai Stargazer X quite comfortable thanks to its plush seats. They also won’t get bored, especially during long trips, as second-row occupants can plug in their handheld gaming consoles or smartphones on the two USB ports provided at the back of the front center armrest.
There’s also a pop-up tray for those who like to snack while traveling and a foldable second-row armrest for those who like to hunch over while napping in between journeys.
Hyundai also made sure to put treats for parents. For example, the front and second-row seats have unique red stitching while the instrument panel and the infotainment screen are now housed in a sexy and seamless casing.
The dashboard is also finished in soft-touch material while the gear shifter is pleasantly ergonomic.
On that note, one can be sure that his or her family will have a comfortable experience aboard the Hyundai Stargazer X.
Capable commuter
The Hyundai Stargazer X proved its mettle by showing how well it performs as a possible daily commuter.
On our way from Manila to Clark (as well as on our trip back), the Hyundai Stargazer X sat five occupants. And while at times the acceleration felt a little laggy, there is no noticeable lack in power. That said, the drive was enjoyable and admirable and our determination grew with each step of the gas pedal.
Under its hood is a 1.5-liter gasoline engine paired with Hyundai’s Intelligent Variable Transmission. A manual mode is available, which might help in certain driving situations. However, one has to shift without the use of a third pedal, which might feel awkward if you’re used to driving stick.
The said setup makes as much as 113 horsepower with 144 Newton-meters of torque.
Here are some of its engine specs at a glance:
- Engine type: Smartstream G1.5
- Engine displacement: 1,497cc
- Maximum power: 113 horsepower
- Maximum torque: 144 Newton-meters
- Fuel type: Gasoline
Stopping power comes from disc brakes that measure 15 inches at the front and 14 inches at the rear. These proved ample enough to bring the MPV to halts at various driving speeds. Such being the case, the Hyundai Stargazer X gives those behind the wheel confidence and peace of mind while on the road.
On top of having decent power, the Hyundai Stargazer X also impresses with its nimbleness. During our two-day drive, the folks from Hyundai Motor Philippines Incorporated took us to narrow avenues with tight traffic to showcase that the seven-seater MPV can also weave through tapered thoroughfares abundant in the metro.
Reasonably-priced ride
The Hyundai Stargazer X comes in as a reasonably-priced ride. Compared with other top-tier family MPVs — like the Mitsubishi Xpander Cross for example — the Stargazer X has a price tag that’s not too low nor is too high.
Hyundai Motor Philippines Incorporated is selling the Stargazer X for P1.348 million. For comparison’s sake, the Mitsubishi Xpander Cross has a sticker price of P1.328 million.
Conclusion
Having driven the Hyundai Stargazer X, we can say that it’s a good family MPV. The fancy features offered by the range-topping variant of the Stargazer nameplate can make not just the driver but also the passengers enjoy the unique appointments found in this model.
It’s also competitively priced, which is why it’s a solid option for those in the market for a comfortable, safe, and capable vehicle to drive with their loved ones.
