Geely GX3 Pro vs. the competition

The Geely GX3 Pro is the brand’s entry into the country’s highly-competitive crossover segment. It was initially touted as one of the most powerful nameplates in its category as it packs the same powerplant as the Emgrand sedan.

A few years after its introduction, let’s see how the Geely GX3 Pro fares against the competition.

But before we begin, here are a few things you need to know about Geely’s compact crossover.

Exterior features

The Geely GX3 Pro wears a grille with a similar design to the Emgrand. It is slapped with the brand’s emblem and is flanked by halogen projector headlamps, daytime running lamps, and turn signals.

Its side profile is highlighted by black wheel arches, door claddings, and pillars. Its side mirrors have a carbon fiber design and match well with its side skirts. It also has roof rails and a small sunroof.

At the back, the Geely GX3 Pro has aggressive-looking taillamps, a spoiler with a third brake lamp, and a rear bumper with reflectors, and diffusers.

Interior appointments

Inside, the Geely GX3 Pro gets leather-feel PVC seats, a leather-wrapped multi-functional steering wheel, a shifter with a leather boot, and a manual parking brake covered in a similar material.

The Geely GX3 Pro also boasts an instrument cluster that combines both analog and digital gauges, an eight-inch touchscreen infotainment screen, and a single-zone automatic air conditioner.

Engine

As we’ve briefly covered above, the Geely GX3 Pro is powered by the same engine as the Emgrand. On that note, it uses a 1.5-liter naturally-aspirated powerplant mated to a continuously variable transmission (CVT) with a manual mode.

It makes as much as 102 horsepower (hp) with 142 Newton-meters (Nm) of torque.

The Geely GX3 Pro is priced from P778,000-P878,000.

Those who are not sold on what the Geely GX3 Pro has to offer can check out some of the available alternatives in the local crossover category. One of them is the Toyota Raize.

Toyota Raize

The Toyota Raize is a solid option for anyone looking for a compact vehicle that offers decent ground clearance and a relatively capable engine.

At its fore is a large grille with sleek-looking headlamps and daytime running lamps. On its cheeks are fog lamps and turn signals.

To its sides are black wheel arches while its doors get some sort of cladding. Like the aforementioned Geely GX3 Pro, the Toyota Raize also wears blacked-out pillars and side mirrors. However, it lacks a pair of roof rails and a sunroof.

At the back of the Toyota Raize is a conspicuous roof-mounted spoiler with an integrated brake lamp, two LED taillamps, and an aggressive-looking rear bumper with reflectors.

Inside, the Toyota Raize offers its owners sporty appointments. Welcoming the driver and the front passenger are bucket-like seats with a Y-shaped design finished in fabric upholstery, a leather-wrapped multi-functional steering wheel, and a gear shifter with a leather boot.

The instrument cluster combines both digital and analog meters while the eight-inch infotainment system is both quick and snappy. We would like to point out that the infotainment unit of the Toyota Raize is equipped with both Apple Carplay and Android Auto while that of the Geely GX3 Pro is not.

Under the hood of the Toyota Raize is a 1.2-liter naturally-aspirated gasoline paired with a CVT. It dishes out some 86 horses with 113 Nm of pulling power.

Kia Stonic

The Kia Stonic is yet another crossover worthy of checking out.

From the Hyundai-owned South Korean brand, the Kia Stonic offers subtle aggressive styling with the carmaker’s tiger-nose grille. It is surrounded by a pair of stylish headlamps and daytime running lamps with a modern-looking latticework on the lower bumper with a robust chin.

The side of the Kia Stonic also gets black overfenders, bottom door covers, side mirrors, and pillars. It also gets a black dome with roof rails.

Behind the Kia Stonic are sleek rear combination taillamps, back up lamps with rear reflectors, a rear spoiler with a brake lamp, and a black rear bumper.

The cabin of Kia’s crossover gets leather seats, a multi-functional steering wheel wrapped in leather, and a shifter with a leather cover. It also has an instrument cluster with both analog and digital displays and an instrument cluster with Apple Carplay.

The Kia Stonic is powered by a 1.4-liter gasoline powerplant mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. It puts out 98 hp with 132 Nm of torque.

The Kia Stonic has a sticker price that ranges from P853,000 to P990,000.
