Standing out from the herd: Hyundai Venue vs. Toyota Raize

Standing out from the herd: Hyundai Venue vs. Toyota Raize

The already-crowded subcompact crossover market is bound to get more packed still. After all, Toyota is close to officially introducing the Raize (that would be tomorrow), which will compete with current models such as the Hyundai Venue

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • What are the special features of the Hyundai Venue?

The Venue offers leather seats, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto-compatible infotainment, and six speakers.
  • What powers the Toyota Raize Turbo?

The Raize Turbo CVT is powered by the same engine from the Wigo, but with a turbocharger that results in 99hp and 140Nm of torque.
  • Hyundai's mini-SUV is perhaps underrated, because its presence on public roads seems to be few and far between. But you'll quickly recognize a Venue when you see one.

The crossover wears a distinctive fascia, featuring strips of signal light housings above the squared-off headlamps. The carmaker's signature diagonal grille dominates the front end.

Viewed from the side, the Venue's boxy shape is a refreshing sight amid the swoopy designs of many of its peers. The blacked-out A-pillar creates the illusion that the windshield and the side windows are made from one piece of glass. The rear features Z-shaped tail light details and the Venue inscription.

To create the SUV look, the Venue is fitted with silver roof rails, black body cladding, and silver/black alloy wheels.

The interior of the Venue promises a comfortable ride, as it can come with leather seats, six-speaker audio, and an infotainment system with an eight-inch touchscreen, The Venue fulfills the modern car prerequisites such as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibilities.

Moving on to the Raize — Toyota's first local entry to the small crossover class. One look at the Raize's badge, and you can already make the bold assumption that Toyota has another best-seller in its hands.

The Raize is indeed a Toyota, as its appearance takes the styling cues from its stablemates. Among these cues is the triangular front air dam, which are also flanked by triangular fog light housings. The Raize wears a sparse side profile as well, but is made unique by the wraparound rear windscreen.

To complement the 17-inch alloy wheels, there's a selection of bright color options for the body that are matched with a black roof, so as to create a sporty look.

"Sporty" can describe the Raize's running gear, too, as it consists of a turbocharger that gives the Wigo-sourced one-liter, three-cylinder engine added oomph. This added boost results to 98hp and 140Nm of torque from 2,400rpm. A CVT is paired to the turbo-triple. An NA 1.2-liter powers the lower variants, by the way.

The Raize will also appeal to the techie set, as it's equipped with features expected in this class. These toys are smart keyless entry, push start ignition, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto-enabled nine-inch infotainment screen.

Meanwhile, side airbags, front- and rear parking sensors, and reversing camera are part of the safety kit.

So the Venue and Raize are elbowing their way in the mini-SUV class with attractive features — and equally interesting spec sheets.  We look at them in greater detail below.
