What does the 'AllGrip Pro' mean in the Suzuki Jimny?
One of the many things that probably caught your attention with Suzuki's latest iteration of its cute ute Jimny was the "AllGrip Pro" appellation.
So what is behind that name anyway? Well, in a nutshell, the four-wheel-drive (4WD) technology of the auto brand has been redefined under the AllGrip.
With more than 50 years of experience Suzuki, through AllGrip, seeks to provide confidence needed for daily adventures on the road without compromising driving style and quality.
AllGrip involves a relatively lightweight system that guarantees greater peace of mind and driving thrill even in extreme road conditions such as rough terrains, downpours, and winding roads. This can be attributed to the "drive-anywhere" advantages and additional traction of its 4WD capability.
AllGrip Pro
AllGrip Pro meets the required driving performance to automatically maneuver and respond to even the most challenging terrain.
It promotes high off-road capability, melding its 4WD performance with reduction gear to satisfy the driver's adventurous spirit. It also provides the driver sufficient strength to go through different obstacles on the road.
In the AllGrip Pro, "a part-time 4WD positions a transfer case between the driveshafts running from the front and rear differentials, and uses it to switch between 2WD and 4WD as required. When in 4WD, the system directly connects the front and rear wheels, making it possible to distribute engine power to all four tires evenly and without loss."
The Suzuki Jimny
The AllGrip Pro is one of the key features of the Suzuki Jimny — allowing it to be an authentic off-road vehicle.
To give you a background, the first 4WD model, which is the original Suzuki Jimny LJ10, was developed in 1970.
As compared to a monocoque body, the all-new Jimny is more ideal for off-road use and has higher resistance to torsion forces. Confident driving on difficult terrain is possible because of the Jimny's ladder frame.
The Jimny can also move through steep hills and road obstacles with no scraps or dents on its underbody or bumpers. This is due to an ample approach angle of 37 degrees, a departure angle of 49 degrees, as well as a ramp breakover angle of 28 degrees.
The all-new Jimny is also fitted with long-stroke three-link suspension that is complemented with rigid complete wheel axles on both rear and front to reinforce strong traction on rough terrain. This is considered a tougher solution compared to the autonomous suspensions found in modern SUVs.
Again, part-time four-wheel-drive (4WD) enables switching between 4WD (for maximum off-road performance), and two-wheel-drive (2WD) for improved cornering on paved roads and enhanced fuel economy. The 4WD low range transfer gear generates additional torque in the four-liter mode for difficult terrains.
AllGrip Auto
AllGrip Auto, on the other hand, provides the confidence and peace of mind that everyone needs for a high-spirited drive, regardless of any driving condition or surface like slippery roads caused by rain or mud.
It features full-time viscous coupling (hydraulic clutch) positioned in front of the rear differential, which uses high-viscosity silicone oil to transfer drive power. "When rotational variance occurs between the front and rear wheels, a shear effect caused by wheel spin heats the silicone oil and causes it to expand. The pressure resulting from the expanded silicone oil engages a multiple-disc clutch, which transfers torque to the rear wheels," says Suzuki.
The Suzuki models that use the AllGrip Auto are the Suzuki Ignis and Suzuki Swift.
AllGrip Select
AllGrip Select promotes the innate values of high fuel efficiency, peace of mind, and fun driving. This allows the driver to select from four driving modes namely, Lock, Snow, Sport, and Auto. Mode selection enables you to take advantage of various driving styles for diverse situations.
So-called 4WD control allocates torque to the rear wheels after detecting front wheel slippage, and serves up feed-forward control anticipating slippage "based on road surface, throttle opening position, steering angle and other factors, and allocates the torque to the rear wheels before any slippage... Rather than reacting after grip is lost, controlling the vehicle to prevent grip being lost in the first place results in greater stability."
Meantime, Synergetic Vehicle Dynamics Control makes the drive stable with the use of a steering angle sensor, yaw rate sensor, and other systems — which it then uses to for 4WD control and power steering control. "It also properly allocates steering assist torque and front and rear wheel torque, suppresses any vehicle side skid tendency at the stage before ESP control intervenes, and assists drive stability."
The Suzuki models that utilize the AllGrip Select are the SX4 S-Cross and the Vitara.
