What makes the Suzuki Ertiga a popular MPV?

The pandemic has truly called for a reexamination of daily life — both personal or professional aspects of it — to make sure that we and the people we care about remain safe from the coronavirus. Considerations of the pandemic have put limitations that are once again starting to be felt more as government has enacted a so-called NCR Plus Bubble which restricts movement and limits capacities of establishments in an effort to curb the spread of COVID-19.

This puts the spotlight anew on public transportation or, rather, its shortcomings during this period of uncertainty. The importance of having one’s own set of wheels during this time thus cannot be cannot be overstated. It is a crucial step in ensuring the preservation of one’s bubble — and, ultimately, health.

Having said that, maximum bang for the buck is given by the multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) format — offering space for most applications whether as a comfortable people mover or cargo transporter. And it’s also reasonably priced, which makes the MPV a perfect option even for car browsers on a budget.

The Suzuki Ertiga is an ideal example of an MPV — with a solid reputation for quality and performance even before the pandemic struck. Let’s look at what stands out in this value-for-money vehicle.

Good-looking exterior

The Ertiga assumes a smooth, elegant profile. It is an aerodynamically shaped vehicle (a product of computer-aided engineering and wind-tunnel testing) that is distinct and modern-looking. Compared to the previous version, it sports a taller, wider front, strong shoulder line, and deep curves. It is marked by chrome accents that imbue a more upscale feel.

Fuel-efficient, powerful engine

The Suzuki Ertiga gets the reliable K15B engine with a 1,462cc displacement — serving up to 103hp and 138Nm to adequately power the Ertiga and its payload. It promises both power and performance, which drivers can access through either a four-speed automatic transmission (GLX and GL) or a five-speed manual transmission (GA and GL).

Complement of safety features

The HEARTECT platform upon which the Ertiga is built gives it rigidity while helping reduce noise and vibration. Because it is lightweight, too, this platform serves to aid in fuel efficiency. In the event of a collision, it disperses energy to protect occupants within. The Ertiga is also equipped front SRS airbags for the protection of the driver and front passenger.

Meanwhile, the TECT (Total Effective Control Technology) body, made of ultra-high-tensile steel, is highly rigid as well while being lightweight. Suzuki engineers put in “new load paths beneath the engine compartment further mitigate damage in the event of a frontal collision at high speed.”

Even the structure of the Ertiga’s hood, front windscreen wiper area, front bumper and other parts absorb have been executed with the express goal of “mitigating head and leg injuries in the event of a collision with a pedestrian.”

To aid in parking and also to enhance safety, the Ertiga gets ultrasonic sensors in the rear bumper, which sound when they detects obstacles. Among other features, the Ertiga gets anti-lock brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution and Isofix child-seat anchorages.

Interior amenities

The Suzuki Ertiga gets a complete suite of creature comforts and amenities for the ease and comfort of all occupants. A 10-inch touch panel audio system (available on the GLX) is at the heart of the easy-to-use and legible infotainment system. The driver gets a push-start system for increased convenience. The GLX receives an elegant woodgrain design on its interior panels and door trims.

Flexible seating makes the Ertiga a versatile transportation tool to accommodate people and cargo. Small, thoughtful touches include a bank note/coin holder, USB port and accessories socket, a spacious glovebox, seatback pockets. Second-row passengers also have access to their own accessories socket, and lots of door pockets and drink holders allow generous storage. An overhead air-conditioning vent is dedicated for second- and third-row passengers.

These and more clearly make the Ertiga a prime choice among MPVs — an excellent vehicle that will not break the bank even as it delivers loads of value in its price point.
