Wish list: Toyota C-HR
We’re debuting a new series where we wish upon the automotive stars for vehicles we’d like to see in the Philippine market. While we don’t foresee major moves in a post-ECQ industry, dreams cost nothing, right? We'll also infer pricing from other markets, so don’t take our word for it – yet. At any rate, see if you agree with our choices, starting with the Toyota CH-R.
What it is: Subcompact crossover
Why we like it: First off, who doesn’t like crossovers — particularly the subcompact kind? Blessed with youthful, dynamic looks, the Toyota C-HR stands low and actually assumes the profile of an oversized hatchback. With rear door handles located unobtrusively, the C-HR tries to get away with a faux coupe look as well. Smaller than its RAV4 sibling (it shares a platform with the more premium Lexus UX), it’s obviously more affordable, too. Despite a sporty, falling roofline, rear passengers can expect reasonable space. The question remains: Can the vehicle thrive in a price-sensitive segment already populated by affordable contenders?
Under the hood: 1.8-liter gas engine developing 138hp mated to a CVT (a hybrid variant is also available); US version gets a 2.0-liter four generating 144hp
Expected price: P1.5-1.6 million
Some segment rivals: Honda HR-V, Nissan Juke, Geely Coolray, Chevrolet Trax, Ford EcoSport
Fun fact: Its name may mean any of the following: Compact High Rider, Cross Hatch Runabout or Coupé High–Rider. We think it should stand for "Check with HR" if we can get a car loan right away.
