2020 Ford Everest: Turbo vs Bi-Turbo
Ford recently simplified the Everest’s variant offerings from eight to two. The previous generation included variants in Ambiente and Trend, both 2.2L 4x2 models that could be mated with either manual or automatic transmission. For the latest Ford Everest, Ford retained the Titanium make and introduced two engine options: 2.0L Turbo and 2.0L Bi-Turbo.
Compared to the previous Everest Titanium variants, gone are the original 3.2L engines. The auto industry is currently experiencing a trend in 2.0L engines, with five cylinders also being swapped out with four. Ford has recently begun marketing their new Bi-Turbo engine which features two sequential turbochargers.
Sequential turbocharging is currently the desired method of churning out power from small diesel engines. The Bi-Turbo engine is also what currently powers the Ford Ranger. To achieve this, the turbochargers activate separately throughout the rev range as it progresses. However, how different is it really in driving performance compared to a standard turbo diesel engine?
We took a look between the Turbo and Bi-Turbo variants of the latest Ford Everest to determine if the automaker’s new engine is really worth the hype.
Ford Everest dimensions
Both variants share the same dimensions and size. In fact. nothing has really changed with the Everest in this department. Ford no longer deviated from the other versions in the third generation.
The current Everest still has a seven-seater capacity with a 2-3-2 configuration. Luggage space is up to 450 liters. This can go up to an impressive 1,050 liters when the third of seats are folded down.
Ford Everest exterior
The exterior barely received any major design changes. Minor swaps were given such as the new grille and front bumper which now sports a revised look of the original design. The Everest now also 20-inch wheels, making it look more intimidating.
HID headlamps are equipped with auto-levelling and LED daytime running lights. For those taking the Bi-Turbo 4x4, you can enjoy extra features such as the panoramic moonroof, rain-sensing wipers, and auto high beam control.
Ford also added the new color option of Diffused Silver. Other colors include Absolute Black, Aluminum Metallic, Arctic White, Meteor Gray, and Sunset Red.
Ford Everest interior
Ford gave the latest Everest a more premium feel with its interior upgrades. The seats for both variants are now clad in leather and the cabin now uses soft-touch plastics. According to the automaker, they insisted on using high-grade materials for the latest Everest and it now currently has one of the nicest cabin builds in the midsize SUV segment.
Additionally, the new Everest specs sheet is also one of the most technologically advanced models in the market. Both Titanium variants are equipped with keyless entry and push-start ignition. Both also have an 8-inch Sync 3 touchscreen infotainment system with Apple Carplay and Android Auto.
Other features include:
- One-touch power windows
- An auto-dimming rear-view mirror
- Dual zone climate control
- 12-volt accessory sockets
- AC 230-volt power sockets
- A reverse camera with parking sensors
- Power-adjustable seats
The 4x4 Bi-Turbo does come with some extras such as adaptive cruise control with lane-keeping aid.
Ford Everest engine
The engine offerings are the highlight of the latest Ford Everest. Ford swapped out their standard 3.2L Duratorq engine for a Turbo and all-new Bi-Turbo engine. The original engine could generate 192 hp at 3,000 rpm and 470 Nm of torque at 1,750 to 2,500 rpm. This is significantly more powerful than the Turbo engine. However, the Bi-Turbo does pull more impressive numbers compared to both.
Both Turbo and Bi-Turbo definitely deliver a strong punch that makes travelling through challenging terrain easy. The 10-speed automatic transmission maintains the smoothness of driving and allows the driver to play around with various gears, however, it can get tricky when shifting to manual.
The Turbo engine is already a powerful beast in itself that had large SUVs charging through rough terrain and winding roads with ease. The new Bi-Turbo engine definitely presents some added punch and less turbo lag, making it ideal for long drives with a lot of inclines and road to cover. Drivers can easily maintain around 14km/L on the road with a Bi-Turbo engine.
Ford Everest safety
Both variants are equally equipped with top-notch safety features and the standard seven airbags. The 4x4 Bi-Turbo variant does come with some extra features such as an autonomous emergency braking system with pedestrian detection and a hands-free liftgate system.
Ford Everest price
There’s definitely a huge price gap between the 4x2 Turbo and 4x4 Bi-Turbo variant. Those who want the extra power of the Bi-Turbo engine will have to shell out a bit more compared to the Turbo variant, however, you will also receive a number of premium features found only in that variant.
Verdict
Ford has gone back to the Everest’s roots by focusing on delivering a powerful drive with a premium feel. The 4x2 Turbo variant is definitely a powerful model, and for the price tag, you’d already been taking home an impressive vehicle.
On the other hand, it looks like the Bi-Turbo engine trend might be here to stay. If you’re a road junkie who needs some more punch on your out-of-town road trip, then we definitely recommend considering the 4x4 Bi-Turbo variant.
