2020 Lexus GX 460 - All the details
Lexus is world-famous for making some of the most opulent, luxurious and desirable cars on the planet. First launched in the early 2000s as a more luxurious and upscale alternative to the regular Toyota Land Cruiser Prado, the Lexus GX combined the former’s amazing off-road ability with Lexus’ trademark luxury touches.
Toyota’s posh arm introduced the second-generation GX in 2009, and that very generation has been soldering on till now -- with the ‘new’ 2020 model year upgrade extending the SUV’s life even more. The 2020 Lexus GX 460 is still based on the same platform as that found in the latest Prado, albeit with a few modifications to make it even more comfortable and quieter on the inside.
While this latest iteration of the marque’s long-running luxury SUV has been on sale in several markets since June of this year, the Philippine unveiling of the 2020 GX 460 happened just earlier this month. In terms of competition, the Lexus GX goes up against some tough rivals like the Audi Q7, BMW X5 and Jeep Wrangler.
In the Philippines, there’s only one variant of the 2020 Lexus GX 460 available, and it is priced at Php 5.9 million. Lexus Philippines will also provide GX 460 customers with 24/7 roadside assistance, free maintenance check-up for the initial 1,000 kilometres, and a 3-year/100,000-kilometre manufacturer warranty.
The 2020 Lexus GX 460 continues to be available in 8 different colors in the Philippines, which include Black, White Pearl Crystal Shine, Starlight Black Glass Flake, Mercury Gray Mica, Garnet Red Mica, Fire Agate Mica Metallic, Sonic Titanium, and Deep Blue Mica.

As for its overall dimensions and proportions, Lexus hasn’t really made any notable changes to the 2020 GX 460. The new GX 460 specs still remains a large and formidable-looking SUV, a decade after the outgoing generation was first launched. The 2020 Lexus GX 460 specs boast a towing capacity of nearly three tonnes, ground clearance of 205 mm, an approach angle of 28 degrees and a departure angle of 25 degrees.
Exterior
If you are trying to find any major design or styling changes, you are not going to find any on the 2020 Lexus GX 460. While this is the latest avatar of the GX, it is still the same tough yet sophisticated family SUV that it has always been. Obviously, Lexus has worked on the front end to help you distinguish this one from its predecessor.
The most obvious design feature up front has to be the marque’s humongous and angular ‘Spindle grille’, which only seems to be getting larger with each passing generation of a vehicle that it is on. This new grille now also comes with thicker bezels that make it seem even more upmarket than before. Furthermore, the GX 460 now comes with revised headlamps which boast fancy, three-beam full-LED technology.
However, the rest of the car remains almost identical to the previous-gen model as there really isn’t anything new to talk about here. Of course, the GX 460’s overall looks are given a boost courtesy of its overtly flared fenders, bold 18-inch alloy wheels, side skirts, large roof spoiler with its hidden wiper arrangement, and dashing of chrome all around. The Lexus GX is one butch SUV for sure.
Interior
On the inside, however, the Japanese carmaker has made a few noticeable changes. The 2020 Lexus GX 460 gets a revised instrument cluster, new three-spoke steering wheel, and charging ports for rear-seat passengers, finally! Apart from these niceties, the rest is business as usual. There are swathes of soft leather and expensive-looking (and feeling) new Grey Sapele wood with aluminium trim as well.
As expected of a Lexus, the GX 460’s build quality is absolutely sublime -- you won’t be hearing any rattles or squeaks for a long, long time. Fit & finish is equally impressive, whilst the cushy seats do a splendid job of making every journey feel effortless. Moreover, all three rows are well thought-out, with the last row feeling quite generous in that it doesn’t seem like it was an afterthought.
Equipment list and safety features
While the rest of the car isn’t all that new, Lexus sure has made it a point to chuck almost everything it has got in its technology arsenal at the 2020 GX 460. Here is a list of just some of the GX’s onboard features:
- Auto-levelling Bi-beam LED headlamps
- Smart entry with push-button start
- Power-adjustable steering column
- 8-way power-adjustable front seats with power-lumbar support and ventilation
- Tri-zone automatic climate control
- Lexus Navigation System with an 8-inch touch panel
- 17-speaker Mark Levinson premium audio system
- Power moonroof
Aside from all those, the new GX 460 also comes with front & rear parking sensors with a reversing camera, power-operated tailgate, rain-sensing windshield wipers, full-leather upholstery, and all the other paraphernalia one can expect to find in a car such as this one.
The 2020 Lexus GX 460 is also loaded to the hilt with modern passive & active safety features. These include the following:
- 10 airbags (front, front side, rear side, driver’s & front passenger’s knee and curtain)
- Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist (BA)
- Vehicle Stability Control (VSC)
- Traction Control (TRC)
- Hill Start Assist (HSA)
- Active Traction Control System (A-TRC)
- Lexus Crawl Control
- Lexus Multi-Terrain Select
- Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS)
Engine and transmission:
Engine | 4.6-litre naturally-aspirated V8 with Dual VVT-i |
Transmission | 6-speed automatic |
Power | 292 hp at 5,500 rpm |
Torque | 438 Nm at 3,500 rpm |
Claimed Fuel Economy | 7.8 kmpl |
Performance
With its old-school V8 motor, the 2020 Lexus GX 460 can go from 0-100 kmph in 8.3 seconds and to a top speed of 175 kmph. Obviously, with all that bulk to haul around, you’d be lucky to see anything better than 7 kmpl in real-world conditions. On the flip-side, the GX 460 is an absolute champ off the beaten path.
In conclusion
If you ever felt that the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado wasn’t polished and luxurious enough but still liked the rest of it, then the Lexus GX 460 definitely deserves your attention.
