2020 Montero Sport 4WD variant is coming soon to PH

MANILA: Good news for Montero Sports fans, Mitsubishi Motors Philippines (MMPC) just announced that the off-road-ready Montero Sport will arrive at our shores sometime during the first quarter of the next year.

 

Last October, we gushed about the new line up for the 2020 Mitsubishi Montero Sport. However, MMPC only introduced the Montero Sport GT 2WD and Montero Sport GLS 2WD. And for some die-hard fans of the SUV, the unveiling was kind of “bitin.” The four-wheel drivetrain models are missing. For Filipinos who like to take their SUV off-roading, the 4WD is a must. It gives them the versatility to navigate the city streets and go on rural adventures without compromising on performance.

Accordingly, the delay has something to do with the weight issues of the 4WD variant. Somehow, the new generation of the Montero Sports 4x4 variant got heavier compared to the 2016-2019 model and would not pass the Philippines’ prescribed limit. But since MMPC finally announced that the all-wheel-drive is coming soon, then they must have already resolved the weight issue. 

And we are really curious as to how they managed to do so without compromising on the features. But don’t get us wrong, we’re not suggesting that the 2020 Mitsubishi Montero Sport 4WD variant will be in any way below par than the ones unveiled in Thailand. But just genuinely mystified on how they did it. Did they remove the standard sunroof? Or made changes with the front and rear automatic emergency braking? Whatever changes they made, we’re pretty sure it’s not something major like a change in the 2.4L MIVEC turbo diesel that powers the SUV.

It’s going to be a waiting game till the first quarter of 2020 when Mitsubishi finally unveils the 4WD variant.
