Chevrolet Suburban received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame
MANILA: There’s a new celebrity making waves in Hollywood, and no, it's not an actor but the Chevrolet Suburban. The vehicle is the latest addition to Hollywood’s prestigious Walk of Fame, being the first and only vehicle to receive an Award of Excellence star. The award was presented on December 5 by the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce.
The recognition acknowledges the Chevrolet Suburban’s 67 years in the entertainment industry, appearing in over 1,750 films and television shows since 1952.
“For six decades, the Chevrolet Suburban has been Hollywood’s longest-working actor,” says Rana Ghadban, president and CEO of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. “[The vehicle> is a well-established industry mainstay (that now will) join an illustrious group of actors and characters that are forever known as Hollywood legends.”
According to records, the Chevrolet Suburban has appeared in at least one television series every year since 1956, and at least one film every year since 1960 — with 30 of those films receiving an Oscar nomination.
The Suburban has performed in diverse roles such as a presidential carrier to a law enforcement vehicle, to even a getaway vehicle for heists. The Chevrolet Suburban has a filmography spanning several genres, but it is best well-known for its appearances in the action and adventure categories. Movie goers can spot the SUV in action thrillers like “The Brave One,” and “Transformers: Dark Side of the Moon,” and even the critically-acclaimed animation Pixar’s “Cars” series.
Hollywood car coordinator, Dennis McCarthy, expressed his thoughts on why the SUV is so popular in Hollywood. “First, it’s one of the most versatile vehicles in the business, able to fit with any type of character. Second, it can help instantly give a scene added importance. When a convoy of black Suburbans appears on screen, you know that’s not the time to leave your seat to buy popcorn.”
GM designer Tim Kozub adds: “The popularity of Suburban and Tahoe (a smaller Chevy SUV) in film was first inspired by the real-life roles they played in the military, in law enforcement and family trips around the world. Today, their role in Hollywood inspired the design of the all-new models.”
The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce also recognized the Chevrolet Tahoe which, alongside the Suburban, appears in more than 2,500 films and television shows. Of the 300 applications submitted each year, only 34 have been honored with a star this 2019.
