Chevrolet Tracker to be followed by 2 more launches in 2021, says TCCCI
MANILA: It seems the competition in the lucrative crossover SUV category is only getting more intense as the number of offerings continues to steadily grow across a breadth of brands. Chevrolet Philippines is obviously cognizant of the fact that there is still unrealized potential in the market.
Now it fields its own contender.
“We are excited to introduce the all-new Chevrolet Tracker to the Philippine market. This highly acclaimed crossover is a welcome addition to our refreshed model portfolio. The Tracker continues Chevrolet’s tradition of producing highly capable crossovers and highlights the brand’s unrelenting focus on growing market segments by offering stylishly designed vehicles loaded with customer-centric technology,” said Chevrolet Philippines-The Covenant Car Company, Inc. (TCCCI) President and Chief Executive Officer Atty. Albert Arcilla in a release.
Replying to a question from ZIGWHEELS PHILIPPINES during the Tracker’s online launch attended by members of the Philippine motoring media, he said that the new vehicle “replaces the Trax in a sense. What we are doing is introducing a new, aggressive, and better-priced product position-wise where the Trax is. Yes, we’re taking (it) out, but this is a new product.”
Added the executive in a release, “The Tracker will appeal to Filipino customers who want more from their crossover SUV. Available in two feature-packed variants, the Tracker offers fuel efficiency, safety, comfort, convenience, and connectivity packaged in a practical and capable SUV.”
The Tracker appears to slide right into the niche of the aforementioned Trax with regard to pricing as well. The Trax is priced at P 1,185,888 for the 1.4L Premier LS Automatic and P1,535,888 for the 1.4L Premiere LT Automatic. The Tracker gets a tag of P1,142,888 for the Tracker LS) and price of P1,242,888 for the Tracker LT Redline Edition. Of note, Chevrolet gives a P30,000 discount for either model until September 30 this year.
While Atty. Arcilla maintained that the Tracker is a “global product,” the units for the Philippines will be sourced from China. “It provides the easiest access,” he said.
The executive described the Tracker as a “very important introduction” for Chevrolet Philippines, and is indicative of the changes still to come in the brand’s product portfolio in the ASEAN region — something that GM Motors has in the cards.
The changes had actually been conceived in 2019 but, well, 2020 and its challenges happened. “We had to delay out timelines,” shared Atty. Arcilla. “Our priority was to serve our clients better.”
According to Chevrolet, the Tracker is the “best-selling utility vehicle in major Latin American markets, including Brazil, Mexico, and Argentina, and is making waves in China, one of the biggest markets for Chevrolet.”
For his part, GM Strategic Markets Alliances and Distributors President and Managing Director Christian Soemmer said, “Bringing the new Chevrolet Tracker to the Philippines represents a new chapter in the successful and ever-evolving Chevrolet crossover and SUV story that we started writing in 1935 with the Chevrolet Suburban Carryall, the world’s first SUV. And the Tracker with its attractive design and state of the art technical features is the living proof of our 85 years of crossover and SUV expertise.”
Powering the Chevrolet Tracker is “a lightweight, new generation 1.0-liter three-cylinder DOHC Ecotec Turbo engine, mated to a six-speed automatic transmission, that delivers 116 horsepower at 5,800rpm and a maximum 175Nm of torque at 1,500-4,200rpm.”
The LS stands 1,618mm, while the LT Redline is 1,627mm tall. Either vehicle stretches 4,270mm and is 1,791mm wide. The Tracker gets an engine start/stop system, Chevrolet MyLink Infotainment System with Apple CarPlay, electric sliding panoramic sunroof, Bosch electric power steering wheel with audio controls, dual cockpit design, ergonomic dual-barrier sports instrument cluster, leather sports-style seats with red stitching, 60/40 split-folding rear seats plus 22 liters of pocket spaces, and other features.
The Tracker’s aforementioned intelligent engine start/stop system “effectively helps reduce fuel consumption and exhaust emissions. Fully adapting to different traffic conditions, the discretionary start/stop function automatically shuts down the engine when the vehicle is running at low speed or is stationary. It is agile in restarting the engine before the driver releases the brake pedal, ensuring that a smooth drive and vehicle performance are maintained and consistent.”
Among its complement of active and passive safety technologies are front and rear disc brakes, anti-lock brakes, electronic stability control, emergency brake warning, rollover mitigation, enhanced understeer control, mini spare detection, cornering brake control, traction control system, engine drag control, panic brake assist, hill start assist, low vacuum brake assist, no vacuum brake assist, fading brake assist, torque vectoring brakes, engine immobilizer, anti-theft alert system, express-up window with anti-pinch function, tire pressure monitoring system, driver, front passenger, and side airbags, Isofix system, electric heated side mirrors, and reverse camera with a wide 130-degree viewing angle.
More exciting products are forthcoming for Chevrolet Philippines. “This is just the first,” maintained Atty. Arcilla. “We are expecting to launch two more before the year ends.”
A purchase of the Tracker comes with the Chevrolet Complete Care package, which includes a five-year warranty, automatic enrollment to the 24/7 Chevrolet Roadside Assistance for three years, and immediate access to the 24/7 Chevy Hotline for convenient vehicle service and ownership needs. The vehicle will roll out to all Chevrolet dealerships nationwide over the next two weeks.
