Isuzu stages extreme off-roading
MANILA: Isuzu has taken the wraps off the X-Power variants of the D-Max and the mu-X at the National 4x4 Outdoors Show in Melbourne. These variants have some cosmetic changes that add to the vehicles’ masculinity. Both variants are based on the facelifted Isuzu D-Max V-Cross pickup truck and the mu-X SUV. There are no mechanical changes.
The special edition models feature highly modified body panels such as a new front end, a protruding hood, extra wide splash-guard and a bumper at the back. To get out of muddy situations the front and back winches are integrated into the bumpers. The new panels have been made-up with steel to make them more long-lasting.
The X-Power variants are designed by Isuzu's Team D-Max and EMG. A custom-made alloy tray has been introduced in the truck bed which allows tires and jerry cans to be fitted. The stickers and red-lens headlights complete the new look.
Both the D-Max and mu-X Concept X ride on a set of 38/15.5R20 Mud Terrain tires from Toyo. To fit the thick 38-inch off-road tires, EMG has given the X-Power models a 7-inch elevation with conventional 60mm remote-reservoir shock absorbers. The three-leaf spring rear end of D-Max has been replaced with the five-link suspension setup on the mu-X. Due to this, the approach and departure angles have been increased to 50 and 38 degrees, respectively.
To sustain the uneven obstacles on the roads, large 6-piston and 4-piston brakes have been included at the front and rear respectively. The engine capacity is unchanged. Both of these models are still driven by the standard 3.0-litre four-cylinder turbo diesel engine which brings out 177 PS of maximum power and 430 Nm of peak torque coupled with a six-speed automatic transmission. The interior of both the models are kept unchanged. The changes have been introduced only externally.
The high riding mu-X and D-Max have been profoundly redesigned with a variety of parts in order to turn it into an extremely proficient vehicle for all types of roads. The X-Power models of the D-Max and mu-X cars have completely redefined the definition of off-roading vehicles.
