BMW not to join the Scandal list following VW – A short brief up
MANILA: After the VW fall down, for the obvious cheat reasons, the entire auto industry was on high alert and so were the environmental agencies. The ones with wrong doings were all sweating up and the ones who played a fair game came out all strong. After VW, another auto giant who was on the edge to fall down was BMW, but unlike its former counterpart, the brand came out all clean. Those of you who are not aware of the recent activities, here we are brushing up your auto IQ.
On 24th September, German publication Auto Bild issued a report stating that BMW X3 xDrive20d could be emitting nitrous oxide in amounts surpassing the set legal limit. The report further specified the figures, saying that emission rate was 11 times more than the prescribed limit when the vehicle was tested by International Council on Clean Transportation. Hence, bleaching the Euro 6 limit for diesel engine emission.
As a reply, BMW issued a press release stating that the brand is not involved in any malpractice leading to manipulation of the emission test. Also, the release stated that BMW fulfills all the legal requirement in each country. “Our exhaust treatment system are active whether rolling on the test bench or driving on the road.”
The auto giant also talked about two of recent tests carried out by ICCT on BMW X5 and 13 other BMW vehicles, all of which complied to the legal requirements concerning to NOx emission. As for the X3 xDrive20d, BMW was not aware of the test and tried contacting to ICCT personal since then. As a result, all of this had an ill-effect on BMW stock price, bringing it down by 9.7% when the report was first published in Auto Bild.
Recent Updates, Auto Bild issued yet another report, but this time it was more of an apology, wherein it said, “No evidence of emission manipulation by BMW. The values mentioned in the document were only generated in a single, one hour-long road test. Auto Bild has no access to the details of this test trial, which might explain the discrepancies to the test cycle NEDC (New European Driving Cycle).”
The result, BMW regained 5% of its lost market share and is now asking the publication on how the results were obtained.
