GIIAS 2024: Hyundai launches Kona Electric, Ioniq 5 in Indonesia

Newly-launched models are Indonesia’s first locally-built high-performance EVs

GIIAS 2024: Hyundai launches Kona Electric, Ioniq 5 in Indonesia

MANILA:  PT Hyundai Motors Indonesia (HMID), has debuted the Ioniq 5 N and the Kona Electric at the 2024 Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS).

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • What is the maximum horsepower and torque output of the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N?

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 N can produce a maximum of 641 horsepower and 770 Newton-meters of torque.
  • What are the variants of the Hyundai Kona Electric in Indonesia?

In Indonesia, the Hyundai Kona Electric has five variants: Signature Long Range, Signature Standard Range, Prim Long Range, Prime Standard Range, and Style.
  • Ioniq 5 N

Like the Philippine-spec Ioniq 5 N, which entered the country via the 2024 Manila International Auto Show, the one launched at GIIAS was presented by the Korean brand as a model designed to enhance the overall driving experience.

At maximum, the electric vehicle (EV) developed under the Seoul-based company’s N sub-brand boasts a maximum output of up to 641 horsepower (hp) and 770 Newton-meters of torque. The said power output is achieved via the model’s next-generation 84-kilowatt-hour battery, its dual motor setup, and the brand’s Electric Global Module Platform (E-GMP).

The EV also has the N e-Shift feature, which provides a simulated gear shift feel, the N Launch Control for fast starts from a standstill, the N Grin Boost to achieve ten seconds of maximum power output, and the N Drift Optimizer for easier sideways action.

The launch of the Ioniq 5 N is a huge milestone for PT HMID, as it is due to become Indonesia’s first-ever locally produced high-performance EV.

For now, the company has yet to disclose where the sporty EV will be built in-country. Note, however, that the South Korean marque has a factory in the City of Deltamas and another in the Bekasi Regency province operated by Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Indonesia (HMMI).

As per HMMI’s website, the plant located in Bekasi Regency currently manufactures examples of the Ioniq 5 and other locally available Hyundai EVs, as well as several internal combustion engine models.

    Kona Electric

Another EV unit launched by PT HMID at the 2024 GIIAS was the Kona Electric. Its launch at the Indonesian auto show follows its global debut a year ago

The EV model can provide up to 600 kilometers of range from a single charge. In its most powerful form, its motors can also produce up to 240 hp.

On the outside, the model sports a futuristic look thanks to its Pixelated Seamless Horizon Lamps on its front and rear sections. An active air flap positioned on its front bumper also provides more aerodynamic performance. Depending on the trim, it is also fitted with 19-inch alloy wheels coupled with a ground clearance of 151 millimeters.

Inside, the all-electric Hyundai crossover offers a wealth of tech. Its dashboard shows a 12.3-inch central touchscreen paired with a similarly sized digital gauge cluster. Together, the two screens form a panoramic display capable of showing audio, video, navigation, and telematics.

Smartphone connectivity aboard the Kona Electric is done via wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Sound, on the other hand, is fed into its cabin by an eight-piece Bose speaker set.

Other advanced technology features available to the Indonesia-spec Kona Electric are over-the-air updates through the Hyundai Bluelink advanced connectivity technology.

For added convenience, the vehicle is fitted with a 360-degree view camera, which users can access through Hyundai Bluelink even when the vehicle is turned off.

Besides its standard safety kit, the all-electric model features a host of advanced driver-assist systems (ADAS). Its suite of ADAS technologies includes adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, forward collision avoidance, lane following assist, lane keeping assist, and high beam assist, among others.

At GIIAS, the Kona Electric was launched in five different trims: Signature Long Range, Signature Standard Range, Prim Long Range, Prime Standard Range, and Style.

Pricing for the said variants ranges from rp (Indonesian rupiah) 499 million (around P1.799 million at current exchange rates) to rp 590 million (approximately P2.127 million).

With Indonesia’s proximity to the Philippines, many might be hoping that Hyundai Motor Philippines (HMPH) can add the Kona Electric to its lineup in the future.

Currently, HMPH’s lineup of EV models includes the Ioniq 5, 6, and 5 N.
