Philippine Teams To Compete in Shell Eco-marathon: Innovating Sustainable Mobility
MANILA: The Polytechnic University of the Philippines' PUP Hygears and the University of Perpetual Help System DALTA’s ALTAS Valor from the Philippines are chosen to represent their country in this year's Shell Eco-marathon in Lombok, Indonesia. These teams join a worldwide network of student innovators committed to developing eco-friendly vehicles that cut emissions and support sustainability.

PUP Hygears' Luna IV joins the Battery Electric Prototype category, targeting waste reduction via material reuse. They aim for improved performance and a strong comeback this year.
Miguel Licuanan of PUP Hygears is optimistic about their event preparations. He states, "We've been preparing for months and are confident in our car's performance." He highlights teamwork and collaboration as crucial in building an efficient vehicle.
ALTAS Valor's AVALON will compete in the Urban Concept Internal Combustion category. It has an automatic CVT engine, a carbon fiber body, enhanced stock parts, and an aluminum chassis.
"It’s a mix of being excited and being nervous for the event.” says Jacob Moises Torres, Team Manager of ALTAS Valor as he expressed excitement and nerves for an upcoming competition. The team is optimistic about winning and is receiving guidance from Perpetual DALTA alumni as part of their preparation.
The teams also received mentoring and coaching from SEM alumni, Meg Celine Cruz, Joven Talape, Jerome Sta. Cruz, and Tito Eusebio, who are also employees of Shell. The send-off program held on June 29 was attended by Pepon Marave, the Race Director for Shell Eco-marathon Asia Pacific and Middle East 2023.
Marave, a Filipino multiple Formula 3 Asia champion, emphasized the importance of preparation. He said, "There's nothing like being prepared. When you're prepared, you're not stressed, and when you're not stressed, you can truly enjoy the experience."
