The Hyundai Ioniq 5 robotaxi could pass a driver’s license test
Completes simulated process similar to US
MANILA: The self-driving Ioniq 5 robotaxi has completed a simulated process similar to a United States driver’s license test.
Hyundai Motor Company shared the latest development through a campaign film showing the all-electric autonomous vehicle — developed by the firm’s technology partner Motional — fulfilling the simulation.
The aforementioned video showed the Ioniq 5 robotaxi undergoing public-level driving tests — including road driving in Las Vegas. Its achievement, HMC noted, highlights the vehicle’s potential to safely provide freedom of mobility to all.
In the film was Pearl Outlaw, a visually impaired American woman, and her mother, Ruth. In her interview, Pearl noted her mobility limitations due to her condition called Retinitis Pigmentosa, which impedes her from getting a driver’s license.
Meanwhile, DMV Certified Driving Examiner Kandice Jones (who admitted that she failed thousands of applicants “in the interest of public safety”) was the one who tested the Ioniq 5 robotaxi.
Observed by Jones, the vehicle excelled in the test by following the speed control, lane changes and maneuvering, its ability to accurately halt at a stop sign, perform left turns, and its reaction time to developing hazards.
“As a company that pursues freedom of mobility, we at Hyundai aim to exhibit the potential for safety and trustworthiness of the IONIQ 5 robotaxi through this campaign,” HMC Senior Vice President and Global Chief Marketing Officer Sungwon Jee was quoted as saying.
“We will continue our efforts to communicate our AI-based autonomous driving technology, which is being developed to provide positive changes to our customers’ everyday lives,” the official added.
The film “Hyundai gets its driver's license” can be seen on the company’s official YouTube channel.
