The Land Rover Defender gets a PHEV variant, other goodies
MANILA: Land Rover announced that the Defender is being equipped with innovative new powertrains, more options, and new model specifications, allowing it to be more attractive to a wider range of customers.
As it is driven by respect and passion from the original, the new Defender brings a transformational span of capability. This is through the use of innovative all-terrain technologies for the redefinition of adventure for the 21st century while maintaining its authenticity to the pioneering spirit which has been Land Rover's trademark for over 70 years.
For the 2021 model year, an innovative new plug-in hybrid (PHEV) model, the P400e, leads the expanded look of the Defender.
New X-Dynamic specification is standard on both Defender 110 and 90, providing a range of interior and exterior design components, which mirror the extreme capability of the 4x4 and guarantee that it captures the attention of the crowd.
The name of the X-Dynamic provides a hint to its personality. Similar to all Defender models, it is superbly tough and capable.
It features a range of advancements to bring a more robust feel and look, thanks to exterior embellishments, which include a Silicon Satin rear and front grille bar and emblem as well as added rear recovery loops in Satin Black.
The 20-inch alloy wheels, charging port on the left-hand side of the vehicle, and electronic air suspension come as standard for all Defender P400e models.
All-alloy wheels are available in Satin Dark Grey/Gloss Black finish, along with Narvik Black mirror caps, lower sill and wheel arch cladding, and window decals.
The selection of options for customizing the Defender has grown as well, with new colors that include Carpathian Grey, Silicon Silver, and Yulong White. These colors are available along with a selection of contrast roof finishes.
The Mode 3 charging cable and an optional Mode 2 cable are also available for all PHEV variants. The Mode 3 charging cable allows charging up to 80% in two hours while charging through a Mode 2 cable will take approximately seven hours to charge to 80%, and this is typically ideal for home charging overnight.
Through the combination of a powerful 2.0-liter four-cylinder petrol engine and 105kW electric motor, the P400e generates a power output of 398hp. It will also run in all-electric mode with zero tailpipe emissions for up to 43 km, where the immediate torque from the electric motor enables the Defender to be more efficient.
Along with the new P400e, the efficient and powerful in-line six-cylinder Ingenium diesel engine becomes part of the range.
Individual options are also available for the first time, which includes the folding fabric roof for Defender 110 and the option of a suspension pack on Defender 90 while head-up display, Meridian sound system, and premium LED headlights with signature DRL can all be included separately.
X-Dynamic interior emblem and center console finishers also differentiate the new inclusion, alongside the Eiger Grey satin door handles, Ebony Morzine headlining, and the Light Grey Cross-Car Beam Powder Coat.
In terms of its interior, distinct components include the Robustec seat material in Duotone color finish with console finishers and Robustec ribbon accent as well as illuminated metal treadplates.
As for the Defender Hard Top, which was developed by Land Rover Special Vehicle Operations, it is the modern reimagination of a Land Rover icon. It provides customers a commercial vehicle in both 110 and 90 body designs. It also merges Defender capability with a flexible and wide load area for supreme durability and functionality.
The Defender Hard Top is also regarded as the most rugged and toughest member of the Defender family. The vehicle provides distinct durability and functionality both off- and on-road.
Such remarkable features are what customers have expected from the brand's hardest-working vehicles since the first Land Rover Hard Top models were introduced in the 1950s.
Its powertrain lineup features the range of Land Rover’s in-line six-cylinder Ingenium diesel engines, which include the D200 on Defender 90, with D300 and D250 power options on the 110 Hard Top, all of which meet strict Eu6D-final and RDE2 guidelines.
Specification packs are also seen on 110 Hard Top models, closely replicating those in the main Defender range with S, SE, and HSE each offering a distinct combination of convenience, comfort, and ruggedness.
