The IIHS has updated its crash test to address a “growing gap” in the protection for front and rear occupants. The “Good” rating is now only given to vehicles that provide minimal risk of injuries for front- and second-row passengers.
In 2014, the first-generation Volvo XC90 received a “Good” rating in the small overlap front crash test. “While many vehicles have had to undergo significant structural changes to earn good ratings in the small overlap test, the [2014> XC90 has had the same basic platform since 2003,” IIHS said.
Now, the Volvo XC40, launched in 2017, excelled in another test without major upgrades.
Aside from its impressive safety features, the Volvo XC40 also features a stunning Scandinavian style and smart technologies for on-board connectivity, comfort, entertainment, and information.
Although the Volvo XC40 is the smallest SUV in Volvo's lineup, it is not short on power. The capacity for towing a braked trailer extends up to 2,100kg for the 197hp petrol-powered, all-wheel-drive B4 variant. Meanwhile, the 408hp Recharge Twin all-wheel-drive variant can tow caravans or braked trailers weighing up to 1,800kg, making the new generation of pure electric Recharge XC40s great tow cars.
The Volvo XC40's towing capability is complemented with ample luggage space, with 452 liters in the load compartment with all seats in place and up to 1,328 liters with the rear seats folded down. Roof boxes, which offer up to 500 liters of additional storage capacity, as well as bike and ski carriers are among the load-carrying accessories that can be added.
“At Volvo Cars, we have always designed and built our cars to our own exacting safety standards based on our knowledge studying real world crashes. To have our work validated by the experts at the IIHS in their newest test adds to the pride we take in our safety focus for every vehicle we produce,” Volvo Cars Safety Center Acting Head Thomas Broberg stated.
Last April, it was announced that Volvo Cars earned the highest rating from IIHS for every model tested, becoming the car brand with the most number of 2022 IIHS Top Safety Pick+ awards as of April 2022.
